Lake Trout timing?
« on: Dec 20, 2005, 10:57 PM »
Hi all I was wondering what time of the ice fishing season is good time to target lake trout, early, mid late season or anytime?
What time of day are they most active, and can they be caught at night?

Anytime in the season they can be caught, usually best around early ice.
I think their daily activity hours vary from lake to lake...

I always have the best luck at first ice, though some lakes stay steady or improve as the year goes on as long as the ice doesn't become too thick. But these other lakes don't freeze till January and they stay good till Mid March.
As for time of day and weather I always do best right around sunup in the very early morning. Cloudy days, and better yet, snowstorms produce the very finest laker bites for me, and on cloudy snowy days the fish average bigger as well. The middle of the day during sunny weather is usually slow. During a snowstorm or cloudy weather the middle of the day, particularly early afternoon, can be very good.
I usually have the bite improve as the sun goes down and it continues to be decent till pitch dark. I have landed a couple lakers after dark, but its not usually very good.
Politically incorrect, and proud of it.

I have noticed that the best, and most consistant bite that I come upon is one that comes during a period of steady barometric pressure that lasts atleast 3 days. It is nice to be catching a lot of lakers in some nice weather.

Lake trout will bite anytime. I don’t care what time of year you are fishing. Old fork tail doesn’t like to pass up a meal.

Late season when all the snow has melted and the ice is starting to "rot." The lakers move in shallow and go on a feeding binge.

early ice  overcast/snowy am.  low pressure.  if its a high pressure day you might as well pack your bags.  of course you may catch the occasional fish  but nothing worth waking up early for!  the wind plays a big factor too.  just remember  west is the best!

Just wondering, where do you fish? I don't know what state you are from, but I find that my best bite comes after the weather has been high pressure for atleast 3 days. Kinda funny. :)

I agree. High pressure days after a storm are very difficult. Not only is the laker fishing better numbers wise during cloudy weather or during a snow storm, the average fish size is bigger too.

Must be you guys fishing lakes without pelagic forage.  For the lakes I fish (smelt, shad based) high pressure days are definitely not worth waking up early for - They bite all day.  Every single big number lake trout day last year was during a high pressure system...go figure ???

That's my theory as to why lakers are sluggish, light biting and fickle fish here. I don't have any problems catching them though.

deffinitely early ice. toward the end of the season where I fish you can look down through holes and see them almost laying on the bottom being very sluggish. I've tried every jig I had for hours and they just wouldn't bite.
