Fluorocarbon leader?
« on: Mar 04, 2015, 09:48 AM »
I switched to a 50lb fluorocarbon leader this year instead of steel leader. Haven't tried it out yet, but headed to Tiber this weekend. Anybody else try this? I've used 25lb before on peck and had problems with it breaking off.

A friend of mine swears by it.  It always seems like after you catch a couple on steel lead they start coiling up.

I use 20# all the time on tip-ups for Northern, just have to watch for nicks in the leader.

I had problems with the knots breaking on the 25lb. Ever had that happen? On the 50lb I went with the crimps, way easier and quicker than tying knots. I've had good luck with steel leader, just wanted something less noticeable than 30lb wire.

Do you tie your 50lb flourocarbon, or use the crimps?

From the previous posts I assume you are mainly targeting pike? I switched from steel to heavy flouro on my pike setups a few years ago and have been very happy with the results. Flouro is the only way to go! I have used both side by side and the flouro consistently catches more fish. And an underwater camera proves why!

If exclusively targeting pike with big baits I use 60-80 lb flouro with crimps. I haven't tried a ton of brands (there aren't a lot of brands that make that heavy of flouro) but have had great luck with Hi-Seas. They sell a spool specifically for leader material and I believe it comes in 25 yard spools for around $20.  The line can get some coils in it from storage on the tipup spool but I just grab a hold of each end and give it a quick stretch before sending it down the hole for the first time each time out.Knock on wood but I have yet to break off a pike. As a matter of fact, I have lost more pike from steel leaders and quick strike rigs pulling out of factory crimps!

Most of the lakes I fish have walleyes or lake trout right along with those big pike. The flouro allows me a good chance to get bit and then lend all species! If fishing mainly for walleyes with the chance for a good pike, I will use a little lighter flouro (20-30lb) as it will still land the big pike yet be a little more limber allowing more movement from the smaller baits.
