y'all should have been at our annual game dinner last night....
Went though around 80 lbs of perch

The counter was lined with all kinds of appetizers

The steam table was full of Corned Goose, Venison Pot Roast, biscuits, salt potatoes, wild boar and a couple of things I can't remember

The line had the Crappie Lasagna, roast venison, venison meatballs in red sauce, fish gumbo, chowder and a couple more things.

Thee were a bunch of great deserts to finish it off.

We had a good turnout. About 60 or so. Everyone ate well ;D

Hey RG, did you use any lead wraps so that Goby pattern will get down? It looks like a nice pattern, I'm just curious what's in there that we can't seel...

No lead on the hook, just a good sized barbell eye. I don't fish all that deep and prefer a sink tip or split shot to get down. The barbell keeps the hook point up most of the time. It leaves the fly with a bit more action than dragging bottom. I fish a lot of Clouser patterns that way.

It was really great to see the kids at the dinner. They were digging right in. This was the 26th year for our dinner. We put it on at my fishing partner's restaurant. The home of "The Grumpy Old Men Breakfast Club". We meet most every day for coffee . There's a bunch of you who'd fit right in ;D

RG  sounds  like  a  nice  club  ;D

RG  iy  you   tie  a  brown   zonker  backwards   setting the  barbells   near the  bend  of  the  hook it  gives it a great  crawfish action   ;D  sometimes  action  is  more important then the  pattern

You'd feel right at home Trap ;D

I think you're right about action. I picked up some micro silly legs the other day and thought about using them for a collar. Nothing likea sexy wiggle to get attention :woot:

rgfixit...I was thinking that those goby patterns might be good, but a bit big for the carp you are going to go after....Wrong!.. I was reading that along with lead barbell and light bead chain type flies and  "bonefish" patterns, large Wooley bugger and zonker streamers are a real carp catcher for spot and stalk . Surprised me .
I Started fishing with some friends that are bigtime bass fisherman a couple seasons ago, and they took me up on the st. Lawrence last year, and It was cool  seeing those carp rooting around the shallows while we were looking for bass structure .....we kept spooking them with the bass gear...maybe I'll have to bring a fly rod up there with me this year. :)

I wouldn't have thought to use a goby pattern or large wooley bugger for carp. We always just used corn, or worms, cornmeal balls or doughballs. They have small mouths compared to some fish their size.
But between you catching them on gobies, and me reading about the pro's using large streamers for them, it seems that they really like them. Maybe the large size of the fly catches their attention,as they are looking down a lot feeding near and in the  bottom.

Looked like a fun night at dinner.game dinners are the best...i know i use a 1/80 oz pink jig head and a black body on a fly rod and have gotten some big carp on the seneca river.gonna have to try a gobie pattern myself..coffee time then back to tying my jigs..

Choo Choo,
You really need to go after some carp on the fly. I'm totally addicted to it. It's a hunt for sure. They see really well and identifying a feeding pod is a ton of fun waiting to happen. I've taken them on buggers, clousers and small crayfish imitations, but below is my best producer in the stream near my home.

I tied it for gills and they like it, but let it drift to the bottom and work it slowly and the carp, seem to,zero rigt in on it.

My baby crayfish patterns,

Well, they're bottom feeders most of the time. So it makes sense that they forage for sculpins, crayfish and nymphs. They're opportunists and great game fish.

I practice strict catch no release with all carp caught on the fly. I believe they have rights as living creatures.
