butter worms
« on: Feb 26, 2015, 01:14 PM »
So the bait and tackle store I usually buy bait at didn't have wax worms and I have trying to put spikes on a hook with cold hands so I gave butter worms a shot for jigging perch and they worked amazing. Caught about 7 perch jigging today and nothing on my tip ups with shiners and fatheads. And they would hit it right away unlike most perch that would watch the bait and stay close by. They came in and slammed it. Even had my first double on the ice. What are your thoughts on butter worms? Double the price but double the catch?

I'm not big on them compared to spikes. Perch may not mind them, but bluegills and crappies don't seem to hit as well on them, and when you do manage a bite, they are so soft they are easy to pick off the hook.

Perch love them, I think they have an odd smell. We don't get the. Too often out here but I'll use em when I can get them.

They are kind of like a wax worm but a little bigger and darker in color. I agree tho the bluegills and crappie don't seem to hit on them that well.

I was always worried about sticking them with a hook and having goo squirt all over the place. They are pretty plump. Sometimes waxies empty out when you hook em and look like a flat tire, I thought butter worms would be worse.

Caught a trout on one once, but that is it. Gills and crappies wouldn't touch the darn things.

Def. find waxies & spikes produce better than butterworms. Some are so big they bulk up micro jigs too much...

Great bait!!!  I used to raise crickets for the reptile industry and we looked into breeding butterworms. Come to find out they are a nuissance in chile. To prevent the spread anywhere else they are shot with radiation to render them impotent and not able to reproduce anywhere but their homeland. You can order big quantities from the site below and keep them in a fridge. They are shipped in container with food and ive kept them alive for months without adding anything to them. Just in a cool climate.
