Space heater opinions
« on: Mar 03, 2015, 08:19 AM »
I am thinking about getting a portable ice shack in the near future to use next season. I want to put a small space heater in it but need opinions on what people use in their shacks. I know theres a lot out there for small heaters and was just wondering if any of you have one and how you like it. Thanks...

What style and size ? Hub ...Flip over Etc ?

Mr Heater Buddy heater is the way to go ? They make several sizes based on BTU ? That would be my recommendation.

I use a Mr. Heater "cooker" (not the Buddy- see link) in my two-man flip-over.  It really throws the heat.  Only downside to it is that you have to be careful of your line and letting it cool before you stow it in your sled (this really applies to all heaters).  I had one for about ten years and it finally crapped out last winter.  I found a replacement at Menard's for $30 last spring.  They usually cost about $40-45.

Mr. Heater is the way to go, I have a Frabil Commando one man flip and I have used it in -35C range. I went overboard on mine and bought the Big Buddy purposely. Normal in the hut it is set on low and if you tweak it back towards pilot it will actual nicely run on 1/2 of low for milder days. On medium I can very easily heat up a take out meal and on high i can COOK. Overheated this year so as to kill 2 birds with one stone, looking into a 4-6 person hub or a perm for next year.

Got my Mr Buddy from Amazon Warehouse deals for about $65. It does everything these guy's said. It lights with spark ignition and is very reliable, also have a smaller one for my one man flip over.

I use the small buddy heater. It works great. I was using portable deer blind for my shack this year. It heated it well even with all the wind that thing let in.

I have a Frabile 2-3 man Hub Shanty.  I use my BBQ grill tank and the sunflower heater. Works great!!
3 settings and have only use the lowest setting. The tank is lasting a long time and when I refill it, it will only cost $9. and change.
Bought the sunflower heater at Walmart for around 40.00. +-

We have the big Mr. buddy heater for out 6 man. And it seems to keep us pretty warm in -13 degrees. I think we paid just over 100 bucks for it.

Yup. Mr heater, buddy. Rigged up a grate over the top. Cook anything from hot dogs to steak, no lie. Use foil fyi so it doesn't leak on the heater.

Fished in -18 with little buddy in both a 2 man suitcase and a single flip. Worked great and never let me down. Usually use a heavy duty propane lantern in suitcase during milder weather as lil buddy can get too hot even on low.

I first stsrted with a Coleman SportCat to keep my hands warm (won it). Then I bought a buddy! Very nice and better with a 5 lb tank! My dad has a Sunflower heater which works well too!

I fish in an uninsulated 2 man Frabil flip over.  I like 2 Mr Buddy heaters.  One in opposite corners of the tent.  It provides a nice even heat.

I was out a couple of weekends ago.  16 below on the hill.  Really cold on the ice.  The heaters would not run on high at first.  Too cold, too low vapor pressure, the pilot would go out on high.  Those 2 heaters on low were the ticket.

Two Mr Buddy heaters are not that much more than a Big Buddy.  They provide me with 100% backup and reliability.

ive been using the old coleman 1970s catalytic heaters this year.mainly the 3500 btu or the 3000 to 5000 btu ones.i was sick of going out with a bunch of  frosty propane tanks and my little buddy heater going out with the slightest little tip and going thru almost 2 tanks of propane each time out.i get 2 full days off 1 fill of the coleman fuel and still have a little fuel for a for a few hours on the third day.yeah I know I always leave windows/doors  and vents open for ventilation.probably not saving that much money now that coleman fuel has went up but at least I don't have to fiddle around with those 1 lb tanks all the time.i light it and let it run all day long..
