night fishing red
« on: Jan 11, 2006, 01:28 PM »
I know that the whole night fishing on the red is said to be a horrible waste of time, but I have read that at night the eyes move to shallower water, so has anybody tried the night bite on the red in shallow water (10 feet or shallower)???  Has anybody tried night fishing this year at all, considering that this year the eyes are biting past just the AM?

With snow cover, ice and short winter days it's my opinion that icefishing always borders on night fishing.

from numerous tries on the Red for night fishing, the only thing I have ever caught is Burbot.....by night fishing I dont mean 5-7 at the end of the day....all night!!!....right near the Bridge to nowhere....and End of Main....maybe just the wrong time but if anyone else has better experiences...it would be nice to hear....Grump

When I had a permanent shack on the Red we quite often "HAD" to stay all night...nobody could drive home. We would catch an hour after sunset...nothing all night...catch again a very first light. I went out last winter to EOM. Line in just as it was getting dark, 8' of water. Caught 2 (smaller ones) right off the hop. Had a few good hits in the next while....nothing after that. Fished right in Netly Creek once....2 of us caught 10 walleye just after dark, in less than an hour, also shallow. Its definately worth a try but there is no use staying too late...once the evening bite is done...its done till morning. If you head to EOM go out the mouth of the creek onto the Red (as usual) but turn to your left intead of toward the shacks...there is a huge flat in the bend...8-10' all over...nobody fishs here because it is shallow. Use something with a rattle...I was using rattle spoons. Good Luck  ;D

We tried night fishing when we first put up the shack this year (four weeks ago). All we caught was a LARGE Sucker and a small Burbot. This was close to the Steam plant. Our shack is straight across from the entrance to the river off Hwy 509.
