Jiffy model 77 won't idle.
« on: Feb 10, 2015, 05:27 AM »
I have an older jiffy model 77---the older model with the 24/1 oil mix.

Not many hours on the engine, but I had the carb rebuilt by a local mower shop.
Ran good last year, but would not start this year.
The repairman could not get it to idle, after the carb rebuild.

Engine starts on the first pull, runs great if you up the idle with the exciter,
but stalls right out when you get off the trigger.

There is a tapered screw that adjusts the idle, but that is set on its highest point.

Are there any other adjustments to make to solve this problem?

Thanks in advance for any help.

Get it to run like days of old ?  How was it before the carb rebuild ?  It run ok on the high side, under load ?  Sounds like its got a mix hole blocked.  Think it still might need to be cleaned.

I have a old model 30 that calls for the 24:1 mixture also, but they say now to run the 40:1, seems more peppy. I buy the cans mixed with no ethanol already at gander mountain, about $6.50 a can. It make work for you.

sounds like a blocked idle port.
remove the air cleaner and see if that helps.
no idle is too lean a mixture of fuel/air. so could be the intake.
easiest is remove air cleaner if it has one. if it does, the carb is set to run with a clean one so it has some back pressure against the intake.
hows the plug look, color, smell, worn.
turn the low jet screw in and count how many half turns it takes to bottom it, but do not over tighten it, just seat it, then remove it and shoot some carb cleaner into it and some air. reinstall the needle and bottom it out again and then run it out the half turns you first counted, then add a half tun out each time until it wants to idle. when you find that spot, run out the idle screw on the throttle plate and if it runs too fast after finding the sweet spot on the low idle mix needle.
while it is out, check for bends or if the point is flattened or broken. if so the mechanic probably did it and needs to be replaced.
