Do you jig with bobbers or not??
« on: Jan 07, 2006, 09:29 AM »
What's your opinion on this topic??  I guess i'm old fashioned...i still use a slip bobber.  Although, i lost a monster northern on my jigging rod last year because i couldn't get the bobber off in time.   >:(  I just think i have more success keeping my jig and bait at a certain depth.

I use slip bobbers sometimes with a small jig. That way I can jig one rod and set it down and jig another. No bobber when using jigging spoons.
It seems to go from zero to hero all some have to do is lie.

What kind of bobber are you using?? I use those long yellow foam clip on slip bobbers. If there is a problem they fly off on there own.

I was checking those out the other day...that might be the ticket.  I use the 3 for $1.59 wally world weighted styrofoam type.  They work good...except when you get the loch-ness monster on.   ;)

I've never used bobbers...I use a suitably sensitive rod for the fish I'm after.

We get to use two lines here.  For gills one spring bobber pole when they are
bitting.  Two when they aren't.  For perch and crappie one spring pole in hand with grubs and one bobber rig with minnows set stationary.  You can't beat the action
of a minnow on a bobber.  You usually have more time to set the hook with a bobber  as they pulldown on a spring, feel resistance and either spit the bait or clean your minnow off.

Just tried the "Ice Buster Bobber "(yellow foam) today on the ice and they work pretty good . If I could just keep the ice from forming on my line there would be no hang ups on them .

Hellsangler,

Are are you aware of another advantage of these bobbers? That is, you can tear off pieces so you can reduce the resistance felt by the fish but still float your bait.
I live in the midwest now but have fond memories of fishing in New England as a kid.

I was curious, when you are using the bobbers, do you use an open bail or just really loosen the drag up so that fish can run if it chooses?

I've used spring bobbers that are so lite that you could almost tell when a fish was looking at it. And it is mush easier to reel up when your fish deeper.Just match the spring to the jig types and fish. You wouldn't use the same size bobber for a heavy lure as you would a light one. Then why would you use the same size spring bobber??

When using minnows I use ice buster  slip bobber .  When using small jigs I usually don't use anything.

I've tried spring bobbers and think they work ok, but I think I can detect bites better on a bobber.  W/ the icebusters I cut 'em so they float about 1/4 inch abover water, and I can see the smallest bite out there.  I've tried experimenting w/ my buddie's camera, and I could see bites on the bob that I couldn't feel or see w/ the spring.  Just my opinion, though.  Different folks, different strokes

I jig pretty much for perch with a small glow "svedish pemple" and emerald shiner.  So that's why i use a bobber.  I fished last year with a guy that was a pretty good fisherman...although stubborn.  I was pulling up fish after fish...him nothing.  The difference was i was using a bobber.  I kept telling him to put one on...he pretty much told me to go **** myself.  Next time we went i see him quietly pulling fish up...i walk over to the hole and he had a brand new bobber on.   :D

I've been using bobbers exclusively now since last year... with the exception of using jigging raps or darters which I just starting using this year!  First eye on a darter was just awesome!!!

Anyways... I'll leave my rod sit a bit and if no action or marking anything after awhile I'll jig a bit... once the fish move in I try and figure out how they want it presented.  Usually the bobber does the work for me, but sometimes I have to let the bait lay on bottom and then slowly bring it up off and get the fish to chase it.   Don't think the action of the bobber affects my jigging results tho.... my $.02.

I use an open bail and  loosen the drag so the fish run with it to make it more fun and enjoy my pan fishing.
