Finding dead pickerel on the ice drives me nuts, and garbage is even worse. Educated people get paid a lot of money to manage our lakes and ponds. Some idiots think they're "controlling the pickerel population" when in fact they're screwing up the entire ecosystem. I'm never thrilled to catch a bunch of rat pickerel but it's better than not catching anything at all. I'm also not ignorant enough to leave them to die on the ice. Maybe these people should find a better place to fish. Better yet, maybe they should do all of us a favor and find a new hobby!

I strongly agree with not leaving fish on ice. My father-in-law used to always leave pickerel for the eagles when we were on Grand Lake in Maine. Eagles don't need help finding food. Disagreed to know avail. Fish belong in the water or our bellies. Mmmm.
Ice, Beer, Tip-ups...Can it get any better than this? Oh yeah... My wife stayed home. :-)

3 of us met up at west twin last march and found at least 50 small perch scattered on top of the ice. What the heck was that all about?!?! Put the fish back down the hole! Is that so hard?

It's also proven the small fish breed small smaller fish.  Same way small deer breed smaller genetic deer. I'm not one for throwing fish on the ice. But if there small then maybe there doing it for a reason other than wasting them.  Just my honest point of view.

Then maybe a bunch of us should get together and propose a creel limit. It would be the only way to keep them from throwing them on the ice. I believe this would work as apose to poaching. Right or wrong? All opinions are excepted and respected on this subject.

I know many of you will not be for this but after the circus that this german brown trout (or whatever they are) stocking I saw a ton of things that made me furious. It was like all the trashy people that, turn this sport into a joke, came out to drink and trash the place. I'm a meat fisherman by nature but they definitely need to tighten the lines an all fishing at least for a little bit to push those "fisherman" back under the rock they came from. I bet they are the same type of people that throw 50 perch on the ice. I was really disappointed with all the people that do not respect fish at all and only fish to kill and take selfies.

I've heard the "eagle food" line before when I confronted a guy about leaving picks on the ice. This guy was so drunk that he couldn't put a full sentence together. Dumbest thing I've ever heard. I wanted to shove him down his ice hole. Maybe it makes people feel manly to kill fish for no reason?

No offense thinice, but as I said, highly educated people get paid a lot to study the populations and genetics of fish and other game. Nowhere in the anglers guide does it encourage us to play Charles Darwin and decide which fish are the strongest. I'm pretty sure mother nature takes care of that.

I think the earth has done pretty well managing itself for the last 4.5 billion year. I don't think it needs us humans to decide when its time to "thin out" a species. ::)
For now I think I'll just C&R everything...other than a few fish for the table...and let Mother Earth continue to take care of itself.
Just me Humble opinion...

yea trash is a huge problem with some fisherman, if you can carry the stuff out on the ice then carry back with you.  Your parents arent there to pick up after you and there are no little elves that are going to pick your junk up.  People dont realize that they are ruining the environment that houses the most important part of the sport.  Only when the lakes are so polluted that you cant eat the fish or can only eat a certain amount every month so that you dont poison your own body will they realize.  Wait thats already the case.  Good thing there are some people who can see the bigger picture.  As far as leaving fish on the ice your not doing anyone a favor those pickerels breed and have bait size fish that feed the larger fish. Your actually hurting the ecosystem as someone said.  I personally love fishing for pickerel on tip ups, they are probably one of the best fighting fish once there a few lbs.  If the polluters want there kids kids kids to able to enjoy the sport take off your beer goggles and do the right thing.

-I see this far too often as well-fish on the ice. Most panfish/pickerel populations are not stunted+ will not benefit from this "thinning" practice- I see this a lot on river coves-live fish I put back- frozen ones I give away to people I know at work.-In ct. you're only allowed 6 pickerel in lakes+ ponds per day so if someone ices more than that- they're over limit+ if the warden was there-he'd fine them.-as for perch/panfish:perhaps there should be some sort of arbitrary daily limit to prevent or at least limit this practice.-As for those seeforellen things: I only went for two days looking for those giant trout- first day with my friend- second with my brother- the one I caught was the only one we even saw in the lake-and those who just came for the liquor were relegated to the boat launch area and weren't all the way out by the rocks which is where I went both days. I encountered a father+ son team& some younger high-school aged anglers-all people I'd be more than happy to have seen tie into one of those logs. this aside-I feel there are still plenty of giant trout in the lakes they were stocked+it's just a matter of time before someone ices some giant browns.

Please clean up after slobs
places like Lake Williams are actually private and open to the public because the town or landowners allow us to use them.
I have seen far too many places closed to fishing(and hunting) due to stupidity.
THANK YOU for cleaning up after others.

Eagle Food:  The act of an ice fisherman; group of ice fishers that know they are in a honey hole of perch and decent to return the favor the fish Gods by putting "1" perch on the ice for an eagle, which has been visually spotted in the area and will certainly enjoy the perch, to show their gratitude to the fish Gods.

With the definition of my own being said I don't believe there should be a ton of fish left on the ice.  Maybe one to feed the local eagle but that is it.
Here fishy fishy fishy
