ice cleats mandatory on slick ice
« on: Jan 09, 2015, 10:55 AM »
Our ice becomes slippery during these kind  of ice conditions, be sure to wear ice cleats.    I prefer  the ones that look like screen door springs.
As a side note, the "CLASSIC' will require cleats for the auger com-petion, get yours early.

I've owned at least a half dozen different types of ice cleats and this one is the Mother of All Ice Cleats! wyoutdoors recommended and approved!

I have never had to own a set. Most of the time where i fish there is always a good amout of snow on the ice and have to use sleds just to get out there. Im heading to the gorge next weekend for the first time ever to ice fish. it's looking like ill need a pair.

I'm not intending to be inflammatory here, but the spikes that I use cost less than the MICROspikes® Tote Sack!

I'd love to have a pair of Microspikes, but the only really expensive set of spikes that I ever owned are being worn by a stranger that I've never met -- he found 'em where I left 'em after I came off the ice late one night.

Since then I've used http://www.fishusa.com/product/HT-Enterprises-Sure-Grip-Safety-Treads?utm_source=google_ps&utm_medium=cpc&utm_campaign=google_ps&gclid=CI-J1PTxh8MCFYtAMgod8UAAVw  (they're even cheaper at other outlets, sometimes).

I probably don't scoot across the ice like some of you, but losing a set of my spikes won't ever break my heart.

My micro's slipping off have never been a problem. They're pretty bombproof imo.

Go to the top of the orangish info page and look under frequently asked questions.  Use photoshop to cut and paste the html or other stated code.

Warmest boots ever.  And they come studded.  Just enough not to slip all over but I would not run a marathon out on the ice

I put screws in my boots like the ones that come with waders. My dad has a pair with spikes in them he used to use for logging in winter.

I agree with Jopes. Pair of sneakers and those bad boys over them. I won't wear anything else!

I use yaktrak extremes. Expensive, but still cheaper than the trip to the ER to get my head stitched up was !

Great advice!
About 8 years ago I slipped on the ice while running to help a friend land a fish and whacked my head hard on the ice. Needless to say, I suffered a doozy of a concussion. Now, I don't hit slick ice without my IceSpiders!

ICETrekkers Diamond Grips.  I've used them for years and love 'em.  Don't think I've ever had one come off when I didn't want it to, and I can run to a tip-up without worrying about busting my head on the ice.

I agree with WYOUTDOORS - Kahtoola MICROspikes are the bomb.  I've had my current pair for five seasons now - still work, have never come off, fit on my pac boots like a charm, I never slip and slide, and I've tried many of the others (including various Yaktrax) and they do not compare.  Our wind here in the SE as you know is legendary, suckworthy, and blows the lakes clear most of the time - I never leave home without 'em. Sometimes you do actually get what you pay for and these have been worth every cent.

Fell down and chipped my elbow couple years ago chasing a tip up with out cleats on. Still hurts! Cheap cleats are better than no cleats.

If you guys like the Kahkoola micros you should take a look at Hillsound micros.  The Kahkoolas were modeled after the Hillsound but Kahkoolas made the spikes a little different (cheaper). The Hillsound will hold to your boots better and they cost less then the Kahkoola. Just a thought.

I put some 3/8" screws into my Baffins 4 years ago and havent had an issue yet. cost me a dollar.
I'd rather do it on the ice
