What leader material?
« on: Jan 18, 2015, 03:14 PM »
I know it's an age old question, but what leader material does everyone use on thier tip ups?
What pound test?
I am talking about all around use,for trout, perch, pickerel, ect.
Some of the waters I fish have the opportunity for multi species!
I just retied mine with 8lb test Yozuri Hybrid fluorocarbon.
It seems to have a bit of memory when I first unwind it in cold weather, but it goes away after a few minutes.
Mono always seemed to keep the coils for a long time!
Take your kids hunting and fishing!

8 pound mono here to . I think a lot of people are using floro because its clear ,But I like the stretch of mono for hand lining with tipups . I went with old school original trilene this year and I'm liking it .  I do notice the line gets dinged up more then it does with floro.

I use 30 pound Spider-Wire EZ Braid because it's super strong and has the diameter of 8 pound.  I've been using this for the past six or seven years and never had any problems catching any of the fish you mentioned.

8 lb flouro for me. Mostly target small salmon, touge, brookies, panfish and pickerel. Occasional trips for pike where I swap to 12 or 20 lb mono.

I made the mistake of trying fireline micro-ice for leader material for pike once. It is a small diameter braid w/ awesome abrasion resistance. Abrasion resistance does not equal cut resistance. That was a bad day with more than 50% of our fish biting through the line. Not breaking from tension, not bad knots: breakage from teeth. Back to heavy mono for pike for me.

I run the 8 lb flouro on small traps and 12 lb for lake trout sets.  I would love to run 6lb but it doesn't seem to hold up for long and frays to easily.  There's a few oldtimers I know that will only use 4lb when fishing for finicky browns but I don't have the guts to try it.

8lb mono for me.  I too like the stretch and it helps relieve memory in the line when setting up traps.

6 pound Seaguar fluorocarbon.
I've got the itch... No, not that one. It's the good kind.
It's pronounced "fay-len" (the x's are silent)

You are really missing a chance to out fish your buddies if you are not using a flouro of some type, especially in pressured waters.  Really need not to worry about stretch if the fish is 50' out under the ice.  I have spent the money on tatsu and cheaped out on vanish, no problems either way, its all good with properly tied knots.  The yozuri hybrid is almost as good, tough, and cheap cheap.  8 pound for everything.
