Ice Fishing Reg Question
« on: Jan 12, 2015, 11:24 AM »
In reading the fishing code, tip-ups are supposed to have the "users" name and address.

I have a buddy who wants to go ice-fishing but doesn't have any gear.

Is it okay for him to use some of my tip-ups (I have about a dozen)?

And are we each allowed to use 5?

Thanks for any information.

And it might say name and address has to be on each tip up but I have never seen a warden check or even say anything.

They might be more inclined to question if you had, say...15 traps between the two of you and you claimed that your "other friend" just ran to hit the head.
That's where the "cannot be left unattended" clause comes in.
Most wardens will only bust your chops if you are lying to them (no "other friend") or are out of "line of sight" of the traps.
You could set up your traps 100 feet away, but if they are in your "line of sight" they cannot complain. (They allow for this in NH, but if you screw up they will get you in a heartbeat!)

I can understand the name on trap requirement if you are fishing in a group, crowded lake or maybe a derby. but if you are brining a friend and using your traps I think it may be a precautionary step to try to prevent someone leaving a busted trap behind as trash. (But that's my $0.02)

You could always call the F&G headquarters and get some clarification?

I was fishing Lake Iliff last winter and the warden busted a guy who was setting up his buddies' tip ups before they arrived on scene.

just write the guys name and address on some paper slips and tape them on----that day---the user has to have his name on his tipups---in ny they can be strict on this---we just bring a roll of scotch tape

I have used duct tape and wrote the guests name in marker on the tape. Also have seen return address labels added to the traps.

I got new tip ups a few years ago and haven't written name and address on them yet. Multiple times game wardens showed and only  checked licenses and whether any illegal fish were kept. I think as long as there is 5 or less devices multiplied by the number of people your with at that moment they won't just your chops. Better to be safe than sorry though.

Great tip on the address labels!

Last year folks at dow's said that f&g was writing tickets for tipups without names/addresses on LH

Don't know the particulars just what I was told.

Had a bad experience with labeled tip ups. Buddy of mine just got back from Iraq and wanted to do some ice fishing . So I took him to steenykill by high point. He didn't have any tip ups so we used mine, all labeled with my address, total of 10. Fishing was pretty good untilpark ranger showed up .Ticked us for 5 tip ups mis labeled !   50 Bucks per tip up.. Told him the whole situation, didn't matter ticketed a Vet!!!!!   Paid the fine at municipal building and even they couldn't believe he wrote us up. Big lesson learned!

Conservation Officers, State Park Rangers and State Police have checked my tip ups for proper labeling.  I sold some tip ups to a friend and he hadn't removed my labels. The ranger had him get a pen from his truck and mark them on the spot.  I also use address labels with a piece of tape over them to protect them.  It is such as easy thing to do.  Just remember to remove them if you sell them.

I've never had any issues but labeling them removes any chance for a problem.  Murphy's Law ya know...

several reasons, being tip ups must be in control of who ever fishing them, so if a guy walks into his house for lunch or has them across the lake. Also technically your tip ups are your tip ups so friends should not be catching fish on your tip ups. The reason for this If you have a limit of fish you can't let a friend catch fish and keep fish and gives guys an advantage to keep morr fish if you are not, Now with that said I freely admit many times I let friends catch fish on my tip ups especially when I'm on a good jigging bite but by law it's breaking the law.

I use string tags and fill out the addresses of Friends, Family, and Clients that will be using them. I also add my phone number to them in case I loose one or forget one behind on the ice.

Some return address labels and scotch tape work well as temporary markings. I've used these before with friends who don't ice fish regularly.
