« on: Jan 02, 2006, 08:28 AM »
would a clam 2000 be large enough for me and my VERY active, soon to be 4 year old? also how are these things to drag out onto the ice? how much is snow a factor?

I think it would be fine. My Dad and I fit in our Clam 2000 fine with a heater. It pulls easily, although it is harder in deep snow, but if you find some sled tracks it is not bad at all. If all else fails pulling it... let your 4 year old pull it  ;)  ;D

i would like the 2000 if i only had 1 kid, i have 3 so i got the po-up style eskimo, i like it but unlike the 2000 it has a zippered door that you have to pull apart to get it, kinda scared the kids are gonna rip the zipper. the 2000 is smaller but it has big doors for the kid to get in and out when he gets antsy, i think you have to look at that more than him messing around in the hut, at least thats how my kids are, in and out

hi,
i have a clam jr which is basically the same size as the 2000. We comfortably have  2 adults, a heater, a vex,and our supplies. occasionally our 15 year old joins us and then its a tight fit. But, you should be fine. As for pulling it I agree w/ the reply above. If you've never had one, you won't want to fish w/out it again. Its compact and relatively light, which is a big factor when trekking out through snowy cover

I just got a Clam 2000 for Christmas so I'm reading these posts with intrest. My son has taken it out a couple of times and he said it wasn't bad pulling, but we haven't had any deep snow yet.

I've had a clam classic now for quite a few years, and is about the only way I'd take my kids out on the ice when they were young, and even now... even my girls. It's a great product and if you break anything its pretty easy to get parts for. It is a bit hard to pull through deep fluffy powder. It can be a REAL workout. I've been tempted to make a set of runners for mine just to get it above the snow a bit to keep it from snowplowing. Never have thought.. when the ice get thick enough I just pull it with my snowmobile.  A couple of suggentions I would like to make: #1 keep the paper work in case you need to reorder new parts. I found that they back their product real well, and get the parts off to you asap. Which leads me to the next point.. I suggest that at the end of the season that you take the canvas off and put it in one of those plastic bins. A couple of years ago I put my clam up for the season in my shed. When I opened it up the next season I found out that a couple of mice had a feast and my nice blue top. It looked more like a sick peice of Swiss cheeze. I think all those fishy, grubby smells attracted them like bears to honey. Well I called the factory and they sent me another top. They even  gave me a decent price on a 2nd (slightly deformed top) but unnoticeable to me. I'm sure you'll enjoy it, and you'll be able to fish on those cold days while others get those numb fingers outside.  ;)

I have a Clam 5600. I bought a couple of cheap wide sno boards from Walmart and made a frame to lay the clam on. It keeps it above the snow. No plowing. Works good on snow or ice/

Willbilly - wish I had thought of that. I have a Clam 4600 which is a son of a gun to pull through snow, so I had a friend donate an old pair of downhill skis which I have modified and made into runners for my clam. The cheap wide snow board from WalMart and a few bungie cords would have worked too!!! ::)
Good Luck with yer fishin'

My first shelter was a Clam Jr and it held TroutperchBeeman and myself pretty good. We each weighed about 210 plus gear and were OK at best................Yo u should be fine, just keep the baby batter to a minimum, and you will be allright

Yeah 8" -  It is a little misconceiving when you buy a clam! I thought you could just drag it out there straight out of the box! No way! I am surprised they don't design some sort of factory made sled or runners to put these on. We went up to Lake Simcoe last weekend. I didn't bring the wheeler because I wasn't sure of the first ice!! My son and I got our exercise draggin a mile out and in!!!
