I caught more blackfish than anything else. A few small bows and that was it. The lake looks like a minefield from all the holes.

Hello. You've caught some nice fish. I can't help but notice the way they were handled though. Please read the link I have posted above. Don't take it the wrong way I just would like to to see these fish reproduce as much as they can. Since the bigger once have better genes to pass on and they have the ability to thrive.

Hello, welcome to Ice Shanty. I cant help but notice your comments, dont take it the wrong way. Do you have any idea why the ADF&G stocks the Anchorage Bowl lakes with those brood stock camel toes? The stocking plan for Alaska is designed and intended to harvest catchable size fish to keep the angler pressure away from wild fish.

First - I just wanted to make the point that I do not know if this angler harvested the fish pictured or not, your assuming he released them?  Did not see anything about him stating the fish were released or if they were kept.

Second - I practice selective harvest methods and catch and release methods with many resident fish. There is mortality rate with every species no matter how careful you can be, the only way to ensure your dont unintentionally kill a fish is by not fishing.

Third - I could easily find fault with just about every photo taken of fish caught through the ice on this forum (in regards to perfect handling and proper C&R techniques.)

Although I appreciate your concern for not wanting anglers to hurt any stocked fish that they plan on releasing, and posting the information you have maybe useful to some anglers, I do not see anything in this particular photo that suggests or implies that he needed to do something different if he planned on releasing this stocked arctic char in Beer Can lake. I do not think any of those fish in that shallow small lake reproduce?? anyone else know? Not to saying its ok to mishandle fish you intend to release, just thinking those brood stock are put in there to be plucked out (even though some are released - and only probably cause they tatste like $- hit)

For everyone out there: If your that concerned about targeting stocked fish (dark old boots - and camel toes) under the ice with sharp hooks (which could cause a fatal injury to the fish) and forcefully bringing them to the surface against their will (which could cause fatal stress reaction) for a simple release - I say then dont go ice fishing.  ::)

I know from what little I have read (yes... I can actually read) about C&R that there is no 100% way to prevent inadverdant mortality of a fish you released after being caught. (no matter how careful) There are plenty of studies online to reference (not mine - but I slept at a holiday inn last night) Even when fish kick off strong some go belly up a few days later...I agree there is accepted standards and best practices that should be exercised. I Just dont see any mis-handling issues in these photos myself.

Thanks for posting the link  (yes I read -seen it many times) and participating on the forum, I am sure your a good steward and just want to pass along good info for our shared resource. I am looking forward to seeing your fish photos posted here - maybe you can show how it should be done.

They won't reproduce. Also some how I must have deleted a sentence that contained I also looked through the other photos of fish that were caught. IN SUMMER ON THE KENAI RIVER!!! .this wasn't intened to cause a childish argument. All I'm saying is that we all need to take into consideration the health of the fish. And yes my assumption was that it was released because like you said they taste like mud. So I'm sorry that I offended you. It clearly wasn't my intention at all. Also he's squeezing the fish! It's not hard to miss. And I posted this info because like you said there is a lot of fish being mishandled.

Not offended at all

I made my points clearly - I am sure you only have best intentions of posting the information, and just want to educate all of the ice fishermen out of the loop on the forum here.

Note; I do not consider Tony Bish information from his personal expeience to be an end all or a valid scientific study. He does not reference any information except that it came from his 60 years of personal experience (since he started fishing at the age of 5or 6). If thats is the only sourceof his information I would approach it with a critical thinking skills. I have yet to find any of his experience related to ice fishing with C&R or if he he does any icefishing in New Zealand anyway?

Guess there is a new sheriff in town?

Agreed - Too funny!

Again - I do not see anything in the photo that needed an emergency lesson on C&R techniques. If you really concerned after looking at photos about his methods of a grin and grip not meeting your standards, then send him a PM.

His other photos he posted are from lakes that are also stocked fish, popular spot actually.

Cant wait to see your photos...

Ok first of all every single fish that I catch I do release. Unless it is a salmon or halibut. I am from tx, have fished since I was 7, was a professional guide for two years, and fished professionally for one year on a bass circuit. I think I know how to handle fish. Rainbows are very delicate and gorgeous fish. They have now turned into a favorite to catch for me. I do not keep a fish out of the water for very long at all. Keep in mind I have been doing this my whole life. There are more people up here that I see abuse fish, not know regulations, and act like complete idiots when it comes to fishing. I keep all of my fish in the water for as long as I need until they swim away safely. Especially in the winter when ice fishing. I am not squeezing any fish too tightly. These beautiful native rainbows have so girth. If I were to lightly hold them I am taking the risk of the fish falling and then being in some real trouble. I can take a hook out, snap a picture and place the fish back in the water to gain it's strength all in a matter of 15 seconds. I have more respect for fish than I do a majority of human beings. It seems you can't post anything these days without someone jumping down your throat about all of your "faults". I have joined this site to share my experiences and incredible fish that I catch. I will help a fellow angler out where necessary. Thank you for your input. Happy fishing.

I have and will always release these char. I see so many people beat these fish over the head, cut their gills like it's a salmon and take them home to eat, even some of the 26" fish. It breaks my heart. I should not have to explain myself on all of my techniques. I am a very genuine guy who lives to fish and always practices catch and release. Totally different crowd up here in Alaska that is so judgemental. It's really a shame, especially when you're barking up the wrong tree. I would love to invite you fishing sometime so you can witness for yourself my safe handling of these incredible fish.

Take those pics to any fly shop here in anchorage. See what they tell you. Those fish that are shown are being squeezed behind the gills and around the heart. In any pic I see this happening I usually don't think about it. But when I see it on almost every pic in your feed I will say something. If you can't take a little criticism then tgink about what you post. Everyone has an opinion.

Man, 15 posts and you have made more enemies than friends. I assume you fish alone due to your "holier than thou" attitude and quick to judge comments. Sure, I see poor handling of fish on other forums, but I have better things to do than complain about other's techniques. Although, I agree 100% about proper handling skills, there is a more  delicate way to get your message across, which obviously you choose a different path.

Did you ever think that perhaps the world is too opinionated. How dare you tell people how to handle the fish they catch. Do you really think squeezing a fish in the above pic is harmful. Ever leaned over a chair? Did you die from it. Do us all a favor and go fishing dude.
