Spikes and Moussies
« on: Jan 08, 2015, 01:03 PM »
I tried the search function and I have looked at you tube about raising your own bait.  I think I might have the concept okay, but was curious if anyone on here has tried this and any advice to a newbie.

Mousies definetely be a HUGE undertaking. Maybe better off sifting through manure at a Dairy farm. Ahhh the smell of money $$$!

I agree that they are pretty affordable.  However I have run into the situation that my bait shop is out, mostly because I get stuck at work doing snow removal and got out late.  Figured if I raised my own then I wouldn't have to even worry about this situation.

Also, thanks for the two private message regarding links to this subject.  My first search on the site for this came back empty handed.  If you search for Culture For Raising Bee Moths by TeacherPreacher you will get the previous thread with some good insight.

They're kept in bran millings, softer than other bedding because they are delicate.  Buy the spikes in bulk and keep them packed tight in bedding in the fridge.  PM sent.

I tried a kit to raise wax worms, and with my schedule didn't do a great job of keeping the temps just right.  Didn't do so well, so I try and buy bait in bulk but my live bait bill is quite high!

Well at least the kids would like the butterflies, heck the wife might even enjoy that :)

Thanks for all the info.  Think I am going to try the bulk idea as it seems easier and less labor intensive.
