For you Tip-up guys ...
« on: Feb 08, 2015, 09:30 PM »
I saw this the other day, and thought I would share it with you. I saw the question asked several times - " how do you store your tip-ups so the lines don't tangle".

Great, thanks for sharing.  That is pretty simple to make.  Now, the question is, doesn anyone have a trick for storing quick strike rigs of all different sizes and lengths without wrapping them around a leader tube creating coils?  I made some tubes out thick hose and chair caps to store my flouro leaders for musky fishing, but I make my own quick strike rigs with a lure attached and a red treble as a stinger that slides up the leder.  I have mulitple sizes and need to figures something out before the off season.

I use the big tackle buddies. I don't notice any coiling in my leaders.

Been using rubber bands and those small bendable tie downs (the rubber coated twisty-tie like things).  Rubber bands are nice and cheap but when its really cold they break easily.

I  keep the lines like this....

The line trying to pull the hook keeps the spool from moving so everything stays put and since I use the tip ups a lot the rubber bands get checked to make sure they are not dried out.... usually can get a season or 2 out of the rubber bands. Also, this helps keep the leaders nice and straight and not coiling up I also use the same technique with my 2 ft fluorocarbon leaders and no issue with them being bent or anything

On tipups that have a plastic or metal spool about 2" in diameter 3/4" foam pipe insulation works. Cut it the width of the spool. When you slip it over the spool there will be about a 1" gap where the slit in the foam is. To keep the foam from being knocked off leave enough leader to make one wrap around the foam. Secure the hook in the foam. Keeps line from being nicked by hook.

On rubber bands to hold things, my neighbor showed on fishing rods when break down instead of using rubber bands ( to hold together) that always break.  Use those bands the girls wear on their ponytails. Get them very cheap at $ store for a lots.  Last a very long time.

Cant find them online But here in NH we use Spoolies. KTP might sell them too, its a heavy orange velcro strap with a bilt in hook keeper, holdes line on spools very good. easy to take on and off. Very good product.

My mind continues to be blown by the amount of money they charge for these things and why some folks continue to pay for them. They want $3 each!!  ???

Or, you could get a roll of these and pay $5 for 50 of them ... which is probably the same price as rubber bands. They have a slot on one end that you can stick the hook through and the whole thing is small-loop Velcro. It's almost the exact same thing as the Spoolies. They won't break like a rubber band and they cover the hook point so there's no danger of it digging into your line or catching on a bag or pack.

That's the 8-inch model which fits most of my tip ups. They also make 12", 15" and larger sizes for larger spools.

They also come in different colors if you're into that kinda thing. Here's what they look like unwrapped:

Rubber bands. Tie a knot in the middle, and do the same thing.   cheap and easy.

I use the same Velcro strips / cord organizers as Nixstyx.

They work very well.

Personally my setup consists of the Frabill sit and fish bucket and two tip ups. It allows me to store my live minnows in the styrofoam livewell at the bottom of the bucket with room for my two Frabill thermal tip ups on top. Great way to haul everything out on the ice tangle free!

I just went with a roll of wide velcro strap, cut it to length. I pick it up at walmart.
