New 1 man Flip over shack
« on: Dec 27, 2014, 03:18 PM »
Looking at getting a new 1 man flip over shack and was considering the clam scout tc or the shappell  fx100. Want something easy to pull. Any pros and cons on these? Opinions? Thanks

I hasve had my Clam Scout for about 5 yearsd and still works well. Light and ez to pull by hand. Can load and unload it in my truck by myself easily and can carry everything you need for a days fishing in it.I use the small folding seat that came with it but may upgrade to a little more comfy one. I did put the runners on it to protect the bottom of the sled when going over rocks and bare parking lots if need be. I just looked at the Frabill 1 man but at $499 will stick to my little Clammer.

I have had my clam scout for about 9 or 10 years now.  It has been a true gem to fish out of.  You just have Down size your rods.  I struggle with anything much over 24" hitting the rod tip on the shack during hook sets.

I have the Shappell FX100. Its the only 1 man shelter I have used but it works great for me. I strapped a folding canoe seat to it for added comfort. It fits me at a solid 230 pounds :) , with a flasher and buddy heater and 6" jig hole in front.  I use it a lot with the cover open just hole hopping on warmer days. Pulls easily by hand.

Got a scout at the end of the season. Used it twice. Loved it!! Did not get the thermal. I have a heater if I need one! If you are a one man operation it works great!

I've had my same FT Pro for probably 10 years now ... minor to no problems.

I carry mostly 28" rods and several years back I set the hook and the tip section hit the cross bar above the window. The rod was ruined and the next day I took a piece of pipe foam and installed it on the bar. I'm talking about the foam pipe "tubes" that have a slit down the middle. It even has self sticking tape on it. Quick 5 minute fix and haven't broken a rod since.  ;)

I would not buy a clam with the new sled and seating it's so flimsy, I just got a brand new assembled quickflip 1 for $150 and seems way more durable then the new clams, older style clams yes but the new ones no

you are in WI and I'm in Pa big difference in weather. I bought a fx 100 on sale three years ago.
Do I need it here in Pa, Not after I bought a good ice fishing suit.
I'd put my money in a really good suit  first and go from there.
One advantage to a flip is other people can't see what you doing.
I don't have any problems with the quality for the price I paid for the fx 100.

Anyone bought a thermal XL clam one man. Been looking at one and now wondering should I go clam, otter, eskimo, frabil?

When I was looking at one man flips a year ago I went with a kenai. One reason was the folding locks, similar to the locks on card tables, on the Shappels. I did not look at many of the other brand flips as they were out of the price range I was planning on spending.

Have a Scout I have used for the past 8-10 yrs it's been used a lot and is still in good shape I really like the shelter. But my old back started barking from loading it in the truck and on the back of the Quad last year when fishing by myself. So when I spotted the FX 100 on sale this Black Friday I purchased one it's approx. 20 lbs lighter than the Scout. Since the FX 100 didn't have a seat with a back rest and only had a bench I purchased a nice stadium seat that will slide on and off the bench easily so I'd have a good backrest.

They are both approx. the same size and have approx. the same fishable area. We'll see which I use the most this season if we ever get some ice.

Augerbit,
I guess you don't fish when its windy, these shelters are a must have for windy conditions which is pretty much all the time,no wind,no problem, just flip canvas back and enjoy the day!

I eliminated my shelter seat & hardware.  Bought a comfy, lightweight, plastic type folding chair (zero problems with brakeage).  Reduced overall weight in my sled, chair loads up easily, good on the back.
Depending on your tub, you can sit inside w/your chair, gain ice room for a 2nd hole if desired.
One by one, my buddies have gone the same way.

those of you who have the Scout, what are the frame pieces made from? I have a chance to acquire one with no canvas and the ribs are made from galvanized steel.

Some of the older model Traps had conduit for framework one I purchased in the early 90's had conduit on it.

I bought the scout last year and now wish I had gone with the shappell 1.5 or Eskimo wide 1.  The scout is a nice shack and I don't really have any complaints other than crappy nuts and bolts.  I got a great mid season deal on Ito so that helped.

14 year old Fish Trap....a few rips here and there, nothing an iron on patch couldn't fix, tub and poles are still in very good shape.  I must admit though, I'm looking at the Bay Runner.

I had the bay runner for 2 weeks last year.  It's a kite and kind of a pain to keep everything organized and out of your way when fishing.

I have the Clam Legend Thermal, I got it last year and it works great.  The quality seems to have improved with the nuts and bolts compared to the Kenai I had 3 years ago.  The sled and frame  seem to be good quality, the seat is very comfortable I like the under seat storage.  The only thing I'm not crazy about is the locks for extending the poles.  I did like that I didn't have to extend the poles on the Kenai, but I do like the extra room and seat in the Legend.  And the Legend fits perfectly in the hatch on my Focus.

I'd do the same thing I do with my Fish Trap.....leave it hooked to the sled.  As for organization...I'd do what the gent who posted his Bay Runner mods did....convert one shelf into folding a back rest, build another for my 4X Elite with room for all the other stuff.  I don't take that much with me so its not really much of a problem.

Anyone bought a thermal XL clam one man. Been looking at one and now wondering should I go clam, otter, eskimo, frabil?
Diabetik11 make me rethink.

I bought the Clam Scout XL thermal this year and really like the fact of it being full thermal. the redesigned sled is a nice feature and is the new seating system. to only thing that is a slight negative is that the mesh seat has the potential to pull out of the seat frame. Clam is aware of this potential and has went through all the mesh seat and checked them and did what was needed to insure that the mesh does not pull out from the seat frame. to date there has only been 3 that had issues and they were ones that the pro staff had and this is before the other seat were checked. this was what made Clam aware of this potential issue. I did make one modification to mine, basically I took the new sled and seat system of the Scout XL and put the frame and tent from my Clam Big Mouth Full Thermal on it and then put the frame and tent of the new Scout XL on the Big Mouth sled and seat system then sold that house. so now I run the hybrid house I put together from the two and I also run a Legend Thermal once the ice is safe to drive on with my Tahoe. the other option that is new this year for a person that wants a larger one man that is full thermal that doesn't have the expanding poles is the new Clam Runner model. it is a flip and fish style with no pole to expand and is full thermal. it is built on the same sled as the Yukon but instead of the seat being on the side like in a Yukon the seat in on the end of the sled opposite of were the pull rope is. The more I look at this house I now kind of wish I would of got that one. I might get it next year if it is still offered as Clam will discontinue a house if the sales were not that great on them during the year they are offered. if they are back the following season it is because there was enough sales to justify offering it again. that is why you see a set group of models that are always offered every year because these are the top sellers.

I currently have a Frabill Recon. It is extremely light at 37 lbs and seems to have enough space for me. Never had an issue pulling it but just finished a smitty sled for it. Should work great. Only downside is it does not have a front window. Others might say having no front door is an issue but not for me. Seems like you would trip over electronics and heater going in and out. Heats quick.
I must admit that I am intrigued by the Shappell Bay Runner. I've owned a suitcase style shanty, own a hub and a flip. The bay runner looks like it has similarities to the suitcase but the easy setup and portability of a flip. Weight is good considering the size. It is fairly wide at 42". Anyone has any experience with this shanty yet?

Just curious... how come no one ever mentions the Eskimo Quickflip1?  Is it not a popular choice?

Tight lines,
