Augers on snowmobiles?
« on: Oct 22, 2014, 07:06 PM »
This is my question, is it better to have rack on the front or the rear of the snowmobile.  Really no place to put on the front but hear that the auger will get full of slush and snow on the rear!!!!  Any help, opions or what has or hasn't work for you would be great.

Thanks Spark!!

Home made... works great! It's hard to see here but the knobs that hold the seat back on goes through a bracket on the mount to anchor it. It takes about a minute to take the works right off the machine. Even if you dont have a seat back, most older sleds have a bar there with a threaded hole. The actual plastic mounts are a mad dog ATV auger holder designed to be bolted to a cargo rack. I'm very happy with this this setup and very proud of how well it worked out

I've done both, front for sure.   It's more work to make something to put it on the front, but it's worth it.

Pros:
No snow dust or slush on the auger
I can see it (portages, tight trails, stupid #$%@ Nils cover falls off while driving)
I use the back rack for a lot of other cargo like rods, vex, tackle, food, pretty much everything... can't really put that on the front
I'd rather have the extra weight on the front than the back
On the back, it gets in the way if I'm lifting the sled when stuck or turning around (no reverse)

Cons:
If it breaks, the auger could get ran over
Building a rack onto the front takes a lot more time and work/modification to the snowmobile

I put a ATV gun rack on the back.  It worked for most of the season, until I hit an ice shelf going 50mph and it ripped off.

All in all, it worked great, just take it slow.

Hey, wondering where you got that mad dog auger rack??  Searched but could not find it.  Looks like it could go on the back of my mxz 550.

Anyone have any other good ideas for mounting an auger for run and gun hole drilling on a skidoo rev mxz??

muskrat, any details on how exactly that mounts??  Aftermarket or home built?  Got any closer pics of how it works?  l can see it looks like you have two square posts protruding from what on my 05 and brothers 06 mxz would be the hood/expansion pipe cover, and removeable pins holding the actual auger racks on.  I like the removeable aspect (if I'm viewing it correctly) of your setup.  Please elaborate, thanx!

Hey xjma it is a home built auger mount and you are correct. It mounts to 2 1"1/4 square tubes protruding through the hood and is removeable with 2 pins.

very clean, nice job!  Wish I had a tig welder at my disposal!  Alas, all I have to work with is a stick welder.  I might not post pics of my results, haha.  thanx for the idea.
