What spinning reel???
« on: Dec 28, 2014, 04:47 PM »
I got a meat stick rod for Christmas and I'm looking for a good spinning reel to pair it with. I'm not interested in the new inline reels. Any nice spinning reel suggestions will be much appreciated.

I will recommend any shimano reel 500 series, they have a superior drag to any other spinning reel which is important since your only working with such a small rod. They work well in the cold and they stand the test of time better than any other reels. So many people rave about pfluegers but after a few year I've noticed that all there drags start to get a bit rough.

Any of you guys ever use the shimano Sedona sd spinning reel? I've been doing some research and I'm leaning toward that so far

Sedona FD 500 is a nice reel. I use Sienna 500s since I didn't want to spend as much and love them.

I really like the Sienna and Sedonna. I'm a Shimano guy.  One thing I wish they did was sell with an extra spool. I was gifted a Cardinal UL reel a few years back and it came with a spare. Like the option of being able to switch it on and off depending on what and where I'm fishing.

I have 7 Tica Cetus 500 SB spinning reels, 4 of them on Meat Sticks, 3 on Thorne Brothers rods.  The Ticas are incredibly smooth with terrific drags and come with a metal main spool and a second composite spool. Perch fishing on Saginaw Bay hooked a 6 lb. steelhead... the drag screamed and a little while later that beauty was on the ice!

At one of the big box retailers you can get any Okuma stratus reel for only $25 right now.  I picked up the CS 25 the other day for my pike rod, we don't have any ice so I haven't given it a shot yet, but with a 9 ball bearing system, it seems like a pretty smooth reel, especially for the money.  Everything I own for open water is a Shimano, I don't think you can go wrong there either.

In my opinion for ice fishing panfish there is no real reason to spend anymore than $30 on a shimano sienna. It will have no problems landing anything you will catch on that meatstick. Sure a sedona would be nice but why not get 2 siennas for the same price? I'm no professional and I've never had many problems landing panfish due to reel failure. The trion is a good reel however I think Tica Cetus makes one of the best reels on the market in the 35 dollar price range. If it were me it would be the Sienna or Tica. I did see the Lew's that someone posted a link to and they look very nice. May have to buy one to tear into and see what its all about. Wish sienna had a folding handle for putting in and out of rod case.

X2 on the Siena not a better spinning reel on the market imo for the money. Stradic CI4+ is what I use only because I love the zero line twists and best drag in the industry but they come with a hefty price tag! So Siena is pretty dang tough to beat for the money.

Ticas are nice when you take them out of box but quickly turn to junk, also you never know what your going get with them as some drags are smooth and some are junk.

Sedonas are a great purchase.  I've never had spinning reels last for me as long as my two sedonas have.  Going on twelve years now of very hard use; double duty, both open water and ice fishing.

Excuse my ignorance but wouldn't the only two shimano options for a meatstick be the sienna or sedona? All other shimano reels would be too big/heavy wouldn't they? I'm just trying to remember back when I was looking at them they only had two models in a size 500 or equivalent. I highly doubt you want anything heavier than a 500 type sized reel on a meatstick.

I agree!!!  I love my Shimanos, never a problem.  Just getting into some Pfluegers.  Saharas generally go for $79.95, Sedonas, $59.95.

There are a few more options than those two from Shimano.  One can also get the Symetre, Sahara, Solstace, and for people with too much money burning a hole in their pocket, the Stella can also be purchased in a 500 size.

I've had really good luck with Daiwa Laguna 500/1000 size spinning reels. I have 10 of them right now on my ice set-ups. 3 seasons deep and no issues. I think they run $30-$40.
