Does SD have any laws about carrying passengers on atvs? Was up there last week and saw multiple atvs with 2-3 people on them so we figured it would be fine to have one passenger even though my Honda rancher is only a one person atv. I know in Iowa you have to make your passenger ride on a sled.

If you enter from a state park you have to have state park pass (day or yearly) for your vehicle and 4 wheeler...

It sounds like it is if you are using it onthe roads. If im just using it on the lake how is it any different then me using my boat?

if you drove through and onto lake and unloaded probably no issue then.  If you park on state park ground and unload then you have a problem.  Atleast at highly monitored ones like at Lake Thompson.

As far as regular roads Im fairly certain you can drive gravel without license, etc but if on blacktops, highways you will need licensed, mirror, horn, etc.  On the ice it seems anything goes.

I called Custer state park LE and they said if I am just going from my truck to the lake no problem. It sounds like it depends on the park LE.

Going to waubay in a couple weeks and was curious about this as well. I'm bringing side by side and buddy bringing his 4wheeler. Do they have the same rules there? Be going from trailer to lake.

I'm pretty sure on the lake you are fine, if you're worried, talk to the area law enforcement.

You're both fine at waubay.  Pickerel lake (next door) at state park entrances is a different story.

If you use NW access on Pickerel you don't need anything.  Just for the state park accesses.

NW access is a road that drives into the lake.

I've been checked multiple times and never had a problem with my unlicensed/uninsured ATV. I've hauled 4 guys around with GFP out-and-about witnessing it and they never said anything...just make sure you keep the barley pop to a minimum. As long as your vehicle has a state park pass, you are good to go.
