Since the size of the10" hole will be bigger than most fish that anyone here will ever catch, you could probably suffice with a 6"or 8" auger.
One thing to consider is whether you have a hand or power auger. Smaller diameter holes take less time and energy to cut, provided the blades are sharp.
I have a 6" and 8" hand augers and a 10" power auger and I did not use the power auger at all last year even with 2-3' of ice!
I  didn't mind the workout which got easier when I got new blades. The only problem was possibly bottoming out.

I hope you are happy and successful with your choice!

I use an 8 inch because honda strikemaster auger wasn't avaliable until the second year out. I would've bought the ten. And only because the deeper the ice the harder it is to get the fish started up the hole. And if ur fishing where there is 3 feet if ice and it's cold outside now your 8" hole has shrunk down to 6" and there's 3 feet of ice between you and the fish. I guess that's a worst case scenario. When jiffy pro4 lite is offered in a 10" I'm getting one no doubt about it. I emailed jiffy and asked If I could buy the powerhead and put a 10" bit and they said there transmission isn't low torque that's why honda can run a ten even with less cc's

My 8 inch works for lakers no problem... Multiple 4-6 lbs last year on winni... Plus with the. 8 inch you don't have to worry about stepping into a old hole as much! Sceen a few good ankle injuries from people filling in bigger holes!

4-6 pound laker is a run of the mill every day fish for me, the 8-10 pounders are where the 8 inch hole is trouble.

Thanks for all the input. I'm still leaning towards 10'' Jiffy propane.

I guess it all comes down to the size fish you catch.  I was happy with an 8" hole until hooking up with a monster Laker two years ago.  Getting the fish in the hole was a task and barely had enough room to gill plate it.  It was in those precious seconds I realized I needed a bigger hole.  Kind of like the bigger boat moment in Jaws.

One concern some people you have with the propane is that you can only lay it down on the ice one way. It wouldn't bother me personally in the least, but it's a problem for some people.
I fished with a guy last year who had the propane Jiffy. Started up quick, was real quiet and you could cut holes inside the shack with it without filling the whole thing with smoke. It's a nice rig.

On a cold 10 below day you will never get all the ice out of your hole. So your 8 inch hole becomes a seven inch and if your after big lakers or pike that hole will make it difficult to ice your trophy.10 inch all the way
