Cool thanks! Just wanted a Vermonters opinion to see if it was worth the extra miles to fish across the pond.  ;)

The extra miles aren't the issue for me.  I'm too cheap to buy an out of state license for the NY side.  As I understand it if you fish past the halfway point/VT-NY border marked on the nautical charts you are fishing without a license.  Same thing goes for the Canadian border just north of Isle LaMotte and Swanton

Vermont and New York have had a reciprocal fishing license for Lake Champlain for about 10 years now which means you can fish either side of the lake with a license from either state. There are exceptions (Mallett's Bay, the Inland Sea and Missisquoi Bay). Here it is directly from the VT Fish and Wildlife website: http://www.vtfishandwildlife.com/fish_reciprocal.cfm

Hope that helps!

I've been curious about Bulwagga bay for a while.  Anyone know about that bay?

Outstanding!  Do you know if a Vermont fisherman has to originate his fishing from the Vermont side or can you launch a boat or enter the ice from the New York side?  The article on the link didn't get into that much detail.

Besides Lake Champlain, it's worth it both for nearby fishing opportunities and supporting ongoing conservation efforts.

$50 bucks gets you a full year of fishing access to NY resources.

This is a recent improvement from the past where the license year was October 1st to September 30th at $70 bucks.

now the NY non-resident license goes from the day you bought it to the following year,i.e.   6/6/14 to 6/6/15 all for 50 bucks,,imho a great deal

With a VT license you can pretty much anywhere on the lake- even from shore on the NY side, if you want.  South Bay is not included.

I've bought an NY license the last couple years, because my girlfriend likes to camp and canoe in the Adirondacks (and visit her relatives), and I like to chase Adirondack brook trout.  The fact that the license goes a full year from the date of purchase definitely made me more willing to buy it this year.  That way, if I buy it for trout fishing in May, I can still use it for ice fishing the following winter!

Also, like Green Mountain Boy said: conservation efforts.  I am really impressed by the way NY has managed brook trout.  I'm generally pretty broke... and I might only catch one or two good brookies in a year in NY.  But I really like knowing that they are there in those remote lakes, so I figure it's a good use of $50.

Bootstrap: thanks for the intel!  I think I'll hit that bay this winter sometime.
