New set of Lakers.
« on: Dec 25, 2014, 06:45 PM »
Santa left me a new set of Heritage  Lakers.  They are unfinished and was wondering if anyone had any tips on finishing these.

I had a set of those at one point, i disassembled, sanded, stained and i think thompson water sealed them, or some type of outdoor poly.
You can get a good look at a steak by sticking your head up a bull's a$$, but wouldn't you rather take the butcher's word for it??

Avoid Thompson water seal. It doesn't hold up. Sand, stain and oil based poly. Or if Sikkens is available in your area use that .  No poly needed.

Epifanes rapid clear is the best option IMO. It's pricey but it's what we use when restoring guide boats. Tough stuff

It's not that fishing is so important, it's just that so many things in life are so much less important

Agreed. I have 3 sets, all of which are unfinished and over 10 years old. Still work as good as when they were new although they have aged!

I use boiled linseed on them just like my pack basket, keeps it fresh and prevents it from drying and splitting

I second the Spar helmsman! Take all the hardware off, sand lightly and apply! Works and looks great!

If you're going to take all the hardware off to finish them, just measure and make a couple of replacement peices for further repair if necessary

I have 3 sets and first I redrilled all the holes out a little bigger then heated the wood up a bit and applied snow seal on them. it repels water and keeps ice from sticking on them plus keeps them from dry rotting and cracking. (just my opinion)
