Question about sled runners?
« on: Dec 05, 2014, 03:31 PM »
Has anybody ever tried to use a product they sell at most home improvement stores called Azeck as sled runners?  I have used it on homes for a few years now for various things and have a few 1x4x8 left over from a job and plan to give it a try.  One thing I have noticed is that it stays flexible down to at least 20f  and didn't crack during my first test. I bent a 3/4" x 3/4" piece 4' long 180 degrees around at 20f and it didn't break.  But b4 I go ahead and heat it up and curve some skis out of it I figured I would see if anybody else has used it in the past.  I priced the ski's I want to build out of 1/2" thick 3" wide 10' long HDPE plastic.......two pieces of plastic $120 plus shipping......No way I am paying that for runners.  Azeck seems tough enough to last a few seasons, let me know if you have used it, thanks

Why dont you look around for a used pair of skis, you can find them at thrift shops very cheap to late in the year for yard sales and flea markets but there good places to get them to, that aztek stuff is made about 3 miles from my house they make a few different products there all out of plastic, its a good place to dumpster dive  ;D

I have ski's on my hut now, problem is...  I live in the snow belt of nwpa, lots of lake effect snow.  I drag my 4X8 hut with woodstove to and from fishing spots by hand.  I joke around and say I am like a pack mule, lol.  My hut is built lightweight but the snow still piles up and makes it quite hard to move.  My thoughts are 4" wide ski's may help keep me up out of it a bit.  The ski's that are on there now are only 2" wide.  I thought of making flip down ski's a foot high, but it would not fit on my trailer anymore. Any ideas? Thanks. Here is my hut for reference.

I tried that,

Doesn't slide nearly as well , and the Azec doesn't take the impact in the cold. It is better than nothing, but I don't think it will hold up. Hiw long of a piece are you looking for? I buy this stuff by the sheet all the time, and have the plastics company rip it to 4" wide for me. I might be able to ship you some in small sections, not sure the shipping cost or what the length limit is for ups though.

You really can't beat the stuff, it is the perfect runner material.

Hah, nice fish bro!
I don't think the 4" wide ski is really gonna get it to ride up onto the snow all that much better. Hate to see you spend the money on plastic to have it not work. The azek is worth a shot, at least you can see how the concept works. I think if you bend and fasten it well, countersunk screws and all that, it may work for a bit. It won't be super slick like uhmw plastic, I'm afraid it might "stick" to the snow. Azek is decently expensive but if you have some I'd try it. I think for deep snow you either need height like you were thinking, or REALLY wide skis

I used some plastic puck board from an ice rink to make my skis. 2 X 6 on edge for skis and I cut a curve on the tips and the puck board just screwed directly to that.. Pulls like a dream on snow or pavement. I just ripped it to width on my table saw.

I did a few more tests, and azeck is NOT a good product for sled runners, snow seems to stick to the stuff and at 4" wide 8' long 3/4" thick, I flexed a few pieces after they laid in the snow over night and it did not crack but made a few sounds as if it could, and it is only 25f out.  Oh well I will find another use for it, and I am back to needing 3 sets of ski's, or some uhmv or hdpe. but don't want to drop 120 on em :-\

I cut an old truck bedliner into strips with ridges going front to back and used tiny stainless steel screws with locknuts pulls straight is really slick weighs nada and protects the bottom really well
