[Bait Be Gone]

How much ice does McConaughy usualy get & is it getting close to freezing up? I have never fished it & would like to take my kids there this year THANKS

Big Mac is kinda tough on a good freeze, wind always blows keeping things open, and if and when it does get fishable ice its best to go with someone familiar to the lake, ive not fished it yet due to those reasons, maybe someone on the neb forum that goes can chime in on this subject.

Big Mac bears watching.  It is such a big lake, as someone else stated, conditions can change quickly, particularly with wind.    I wouldn't make the long trip to fish it without making some phone calls to some of the bait shops to check out the conditions.  Be careful !

I would not consider mac a very kid friendly lake. There are several shallow Sandhill lakes in west central NE that (as a rule of thumb) hold safer ice and would be better suited for kids.

Big Mac does not always freeze over. I can tell you there isn't any ice now but here are some phone numbers to a couple bait shops up there.
Kingsley Lodge 308-284-2775, Stetson corner store 308-726-2369. Did fish Mac last year with 4 wheelers hope to again this year.
