jiffy model 30 running issues
« on: Jan 19, 2015, 08:06 AM »
I have a jiffy model 30 and I'm having issues with it staying running. It fires everyone I pull the cord but it seems it's not getting enough fuel. I prime it 3or4 times it starts runs ,it cuts maybe 3 inches then stop. I tried while it was running to keep  hitting to primer bulb and it cuts right threw? Would that be a bad prime button? Thank you ???

Not a bad primer, you most likely have a dirty carb or bad diaphram.  Get a rebuild kit.  Get the right one, there's a letter/number embossed on the edge of the carb body.  Pay close attention how the parts come out.  Some diaphrams face up, others face down.

I tried carb spray today, and the same results. I guess it would be easier to buy a new carb?

Carb spray does nothing except clean the throat of the carb, it does nothing for the internal workings of the carb.  It has to be removed from the machine and then carefully taken apart, cleaned and or replace some parts such as the diaphram and needle valve and seat.  Like I said before pay real close attention to the parts.  The rubber seat for the needle valve only goes one way too.

Sounds like it needs a 10 dollar diaphram kit for the carb.  Might as well clean the whole carb out while you're at it.  If you're not good with small parts, have someone do it for you.  It's not hard to do at all but does require a lot of attention to detail.

Not good with small parts. Think I might just buy a new carb. As for the vent cap, how do u check it? I have it opened.

If it's opened, you've got the cap correctly.  Sometimes when you forget to open the gas cap vent, the auger will start and run for a minute or two and then die out.  This can be frustrating until you remember to open the vent!!  But since yours starts every time, this is not likely the issue.

Before you buy a whole new carb, see if a local small engine place will do a carb diaphram kit on it for you.  Would probably be cheaper.  Plus, if you replace the whole carb, you'll be dealing with little parts getting all the linkages off and then on again, haha.  Whatever way you go, good luck!

Good results, called jiffy customer service (18772892313) the guy said try closing carb adjustment screws all the way, then back out the one on the right ( hi speed) 3/4 turn. Then do the left side (low speed) and back that out 1and1/8 turns.and it runs fine,I dint have to keep priming to stay running.I also sprayed carb cleaner and left it stand up overnight. Now I will the test on the ice by the end of the week. Thanks everyone! ;D

Glad to hear you got your auger running.  On many two cycle engines you have to have them tuned correctly or they will bog down and die out.  One thing I have always done to our 2 cycle equipment at the end of the season is dumb out most of the gas and run it till the tank and carb is dry.  This way there is no fuel to gum up the carb.
