It definitely sucks having the inside dripping wet with condensation and then having to set it up inside a heated shop to dry it out.  The dry heat of wood is definitely nice, does anyone have any pictures of the mods that they've done to their hubs to accept wood heat, or any pics of the stove set-ups that they're using?

Agreed I want to see some too

From my shelter's owner's manual:
"Injury or death may result from fire if tent fabric is exposed to open flame.
Tent fabric is not fireproof. Fabric will burn with extended exposure to open flame. Do not use open flame products inside tent. Tent fabric is treated with fire retardant. Application of any foreign substance may render the flame retardant properties ineffective."

Not sure about yours, but why risk death?  Check the safety recommendations and be safe.  They test these things for a reason.  Good luck and happy fishing!

I may be wrong and this is definitely worth looking into.  I think I read on an IS post a couple of years ago that the low o2 sensors on Buddy Heaters are fail proof.  I'm not sure how though.
I can attest to the fact that they work very well! My friend and I stayed out overnight in a two man flip over and thought our buddy heater was broken cuz it kept going out, both of us had a huge headache and we're drinking ,bad combo! Every time we open the door the heater was working fine at which point it finally dawned on me its cuz we were depleting the oxygen out of our hut.

I have had that headache a few times myself, usually on those cold sun-up to sun-down days.  I would get home and my wife would complain that I smelled like propane.  Propane sucks; it stinks and the condensation sucks.  Every year, I think about building a hard-side, just so I can have a woodstove.  If there was any way to do it without cutting a hole in the roof of my Quick Fish 6, I would do it.  I would rather smell like woodsmoke than propane any day.

Why would someone want to add the inconvenience of hauling wood and dealing with smoke all day.  I could see in a permy, but a hub?  Hubs are designed to be convenient and this "mod" seems to go against all they stand for. Just get a big buddy heater and call it a day.

Don't know where you are from, but where I live (Eastern Wyoming) nobody has a permy.  And if they do, it never gets cracked out cause the ice either isn't thick enough or the ice season doesn't last long enough to even bother with it.  There are pros & cons to wood compared to propane & they each have their place.  I use propane for short trips or when I move a lot, but I would much rather burn wood on the all day or overnight trips....even in a hub!  Besides, too many sad endings to people using propane in ice huts for me.

I'm from upstate NY, I have a hardside as well as a hub.  I use propane in both.  We used to have a wood stove in the hardside,  but switched to propane because there is much less effort involved.  Propane is instant heat, more portable, and headache free if you let some air in.  To each their own, I just see more of a hazard with wood stoves than propane when it comes to hubs.  They both have their own hazards so pick your poison and run with it.

Nice setup. I made my wood stove out of a 20# propane tank one with the old style valve, people throw away those old tanks you can find them easy for free.. Take the valve off fill with water then cut your door and stove pipe openings. I am going to build another one with the tank sideways so I can fit longer pieces of wood.

I'm not too sure about cutting into a propane tank with oxy or plasma.

That is why I said fill with water before cutting. I used a die grinder with a cutoff disc. You can cut the whole opening with a die grinder or just make the opening cut then use a hack saw blade. A cutting torch makes too big of a gap. On the door I only cut 3 of the sides then weld the hinge on the side you want before making the final 4th cut, makes a very clean looking door.

There are some good videos on youtube on how to make these.  They would work perfect for a hardside.  Still not sold on the hub.

Yea a thin nylon hub would be pushing it, but any with the heavier type canvas would work ok.

Great pics, I definitely like the spruce boughs on the floor idea.   It looks like those are some pretty big setups, although I realize they are camping in the tents.  I like the idea of the ammo box stove or something smaller like that and to be able to mount a stovepipe by removing one of the velcro windows in the Eskimo hub. The heat shield behind the stove is another great idea. If I ever get around to this I will definitely post some pictures...

Another good idea is to use the 2x2 interlocking squares for a floor.  It insulates the ice from the inside of your hub.  Helps keep the heat in and the cold out.
"Hope" is not a good fishing strategy!

Upside propane tank & wood heat. Nice as jack and cola on ice!
In my perm, its only wood.
