sent on your tip-up
« on: Jan 22, 2014, 11:07 AM »
in addition to rattles for sound attraction. blades for flash attraction. who uses sent? maybe a chunk of sponge, with some gulp or powerbait juice on it. anyone else do this?

I'm not sure how you got rattles on your tip up, but any bait is the scent.

you can tie worm rattles on your line above the bait. the bait sent only travels so far. a sponge with juice on it will greatly extend that sent trail.

To better answer your question, I go more for sight and feel. I don't worry about scent. I just have not seen anything that pike even use scent that much. Even stinky dead bait was found about as fast as a live one. The difference is the pike spit dead bait out once they realized it was dead and gross. :-\

Using scents is just a myth to sell product.  I won't believe for a second that scent helps you catch anything but catfish and carp.  Most every gamefish simply go for the flash of color and vibration. After they hit, texture becomes an issue but I just don't see where scent ever comes into the equation.  Bill Dance fooled me with that scent bottle crap when I was a young kid and I am still pissed at him.

you cant make me believe sent don't play a roll on predators! bass surely react to sent that's been proven. look at all the products on the market.  and pike are scavengers as well as predators, so they should too. no reason why a good sent trail wouldn't help attract fish.

Scent has to be water based , but then it is easily diluted.  Oil based scents don't work whereas some of the scents developed in the Berkley lab seem to work somehow.  They have shown that some people have a very unattractive scent on their hands that can turn fish off.  I often wash my hands in baking soda or earthworm scent before fishing just in case.  They say spitting on the lure works too -- and then there are the Coffee Tube baits.  This topic is probably as controversial as the "Flasher" threads.  @) ::) >:( ;D

power bait is just what i use. controversial only to those that dont think fish use smell to hunt food. dead baits are a perfect example. scent is just another bit of attraction added to your sets. i feel scent and sound will attract fish from farther away than sight.
