Walleye fishing Near Bozeman
« on: Dec 03, 2014, 09:03 PM »
Hey guys,
I have been fishing Montana for 4 years since i moved here from MN. I have fished walleye and pike at Fort Peck and had some great luck. However, I have tried Dailey and Canyon Ferry and have yet to put one on the hard water. I have caught some nice eaters in the summer on C Ferry but without minnows I am lost as to how to fish em on ice. Any advice would be greatly appreciated?
thanks yall!

Are minnows illegal on CF?  If so, I would suggest jigs.

Live minnows r illegal, but dead minnows r just fine we caught a bunch of walleye last year while perch fishing. Small perch flavored jigging rapala worked best. Nothing with any size all dinks. We did get a tagged 1 as well.

Just for fun try a big hammered nickel Swedish Pimple with a minnow head. Late afternoon best.

For walleyes on Canyon Ferry I use a 1/4 oz. Firetiger Glow PK Flutterfish tipped with a minnow head. Something about the action of the spoon drives the eyes crazy. Works well on the jumbo perch too!
To jig or not to jig... That is the question.

Sweet i will definitely give some spoons and minner heads a go I usually fish confederate bay but that hasn't been working out lol and bays you guys would suggest for perch/walleye? In mn I always fish drop offs and flats from 15-30 ft of water and do well does that hold up on canyon ferry?

For me the old river channel is best for walleye but watch the ice anyplace near the river mouth. Perch, we do best in deeper water flats. There is not that much structure or forage any more so they really get on chironomids over the silty flats. (Refer to your fly box.) And they really move around. Lots of guys like the pressure ridge north of the silos.

We tend to hit Peck more these days as the CF glory days are gone. That said there are some guys that rock the perch still.
