New to the area
« on: Dec 01, 2014, 09:15 PM »
Hello all
Just wanted to say hi and glad to finally a good site with good info.
I am not new to ice fishing but new to the area. Originally from Wisconsin so we lived on the ice for half the year. Was just was wondering if I could get some help in some good places to start my search out here in Colorado. I live in south aurora and am willing to travel an hour or two to go after some good fishing. Also what are so "go to" jigs to try out here. Would also always be up for meeting new people and hit up some lakes. Anyways hello and hope to hear back from some of you. Thanks
Chad

Welcome to the Shanty Browning83! I'm just north of you, Wyoming, and have thought of hitting Granby for Laker action myself some day. That's where I'd start if it was reasonably close to me.

Welcome to the site and to Colorado!  Some great guys and information here.  What type of fish are you interested in targeting?

Hey all
Thanks for the quick replies. I have thought about granby as well and would like to give that a shot soon.
I like targeting any type of fish really. I would like to try and target some larger trout or Kokanee this winter. I also wouldn't mind trying for some panfish or walleye. I guess I just would like to get on the ice and giver a try. I don't mind catching stockers but caught enough of them this summer. Thanks again ya'll

Well, metro locations might lock up by the end of the month or January if we get lucky with another good cold snap.  Then you can target panfish/eyes in all the well known spots. You have A-town just down the road from you, then there's Cherry Creek, Chatty, and others.  If you want a full-time winter occupation, try figuring out Granby to find the big lakers.  That should keep you busy!  As far as local jigs, standard strategies apply.  Metal like kastmasters, pimples, jigging raps, and slender spoons are good, and downsize to ratsos, shrimpos, tungsten if needed.  Some of the laker guys can give better info on Granby, but I've caught fish up there using 3" tubes (white glow, or brown) tipped with sucker meat.  Hope that helps!

By the way, we hope to get a Colorado gathering going sometime this month at Eleven Mile. Would be a good opportunity to meet some folks.  Check out the post at the top of the Colorado board.

Where in Wisconsin?  I used to fish up around Eagle River with a friend there who was a guide.  He taught me to ice fish.

This early in the season, there are not a lot of places within two hours of Aurora, but eventually Cherry Creek will freeze over, and they have walleyes like you might remember from back home.  South Park (west of Colo Springs) is probably close to two hours.  Join us for the Ice Shanty Get Together (see sticky above) down there when the ice firms up.  PM me and maybe we can work out something.

Senac and Marina coves on Aurora reservoir should freeze over after the first of the year.

Welcome to the area.  We moved here from Wisconsin (via Texas) last year.  I have only done the Red Feather area in Northern Colorado.  On the small lake I fished, trout hit good on any of the small ice lures that we used for panfish in the Mukwonago area.  I personally like the Custom Jig and Spins lures tipped with a Berkley Power Bait.

Wy outdoors, I'm in Fort Collins and am addicted to fishing Granby and Flaming Gorge for lakers. When we get a trip planned I'll get in touch and see if we can make it work.

If you are looking for a lake that will be easy to catch fish and enjoy the scenery then Granby is a great bet.  It's an awesome lake.  I moved here two years ago and Granby has become my number one ice fishing destination.

I am from New Richmond WI (northwest Wisconsin) and there was some good fishing if you went the extra mile.
I am excited to try some new lakes/reservoirs out this winter. Where would a safe bet be to try this weekend? I am willing to try south park/FairPlay areas if the ice is willing. Also I would like to try and meet up with some of you all at the iceshanty gathering. Again I appreciate all the input and hope to have some wet lines soon.

There is safe ice at Georgetown.  Nice and close to Denver.  It is full of stocked rainbows and browns.  If you are looking for bigger fish and a chance at some kokes, Antero is a decent bet.  Beware that there have been several reports stating that the ice is unstable and there is open water.  I do not personally know how safe it is but I will likely be there next weekend.  The other option is to join the masses and catch Kokes from the snake river arm of Dillon.  There will be a lot of people there but it's fun none the less.  I can't fish this weekend otherwise I would be happy to show you a few things.

Ah another Cheese Head, I'm also from Wisconsin, and I am such a Cheese Head, I even make my own cheese curds.  Cherry Creek is my home ice.  Have snowmobile and Handicap permits for using it on several lakes.  When it comes to fishing Granby, wanting to change locations a 3 mile walk is no fun for me LOL.  I usually do a fish fry at Cherry Creek, date yet to be determined.

Edit:  Just decided to make it 12/20
