Which 2 man portable shelter
« on: Oct 18, 2014, 10:06 AM »
I am looking at 3 shelters, Jason Mitchell thermal X, Otter Pro XT 1200 or Frabil Thermal Gaurdian. For those who have or fished in any of these shelters, what do you like about them? I've fished out of the Jason Mitchell shelter & really liked everything about it, except it it didn't have a sled curtain.

If you have the ability to use an atv or snowmobile the Otter XT1200 hands down.  Won't find a much better built portable.  Can be very heavy pulling by hand full of gear.  If pulling with atv or snowmobile be sure to invest in the hyfax for the bottom of the sled.

Otter. bar none hands down the best built portable in the industry. The jason mitchell comes in second but it is a somewhat distant second.

Put it this way. There is only one type of fisherman you ever hear complain about an otter, the one who dont have a machine to pull it with.

I was on a bus and just happened to be sitting on a news paper. This guy came up and asked. "Are you reading that ?"
I said  yes, stood up, turned the page and sat back down.

Looked at the FRABILL Guardian side entry model at BPS last week.  Very
cool! The side entry makes so much sense. They must have a patent on the
idea because no one else has utilized the concept yet and its a winner!
Unbelievable amount floor space and headroom. Huge inside. I wouldnt
want to hand drag one but behind the wheeler - pretty awesome I bet. Its at
the top of my list.

I'd stick with a Frabill, their products are pretty reliable and my fishing buddy has one of them & we fished in that quite a lot during this winter and it was by far an amazing shack!

Otters are no heavier than the other brands.  If you compare apples to apples with the Clam or Frabill top end thermals he Otters are in some cases lighter.

I have a Pro XT900 and it has been bullet proof.  If I was to look outside of Otter it would be the thermal Frabill with side doors.

since you said you will be pulling it with a ATV I suggest you check out the new Clam X2 Pro Thermal. it has 1800 denier fabric and is well built. it is the thickest thermal fabric now on the market. It has set a new bar in thermal houses and I will be interested to see what the other companies come up with to compete with it.

I'd go Otter. I have had 4 and still have 3 and they're well made.

See you on the frozen pond.......Mike
