Can't build a bird house, first try. She's heavy, but this will be our winter home.

8 X 12, bunks for 5 and one cot so we can sleep 6. Has a small wood stove, a small "private" area with a 5 gallon camper toilet, solar panel with inverter and LED lights, propane heater for back up heat, and 3 cut outs for holes inside. The 2 benches on the bottom are hinged for storage. Got the mattresses from overstock, they are made for tractor trailer sleepers and are odd sizes (28 X 73) - but perfect sizes for the shack. Got the windows as left overs for $40. I did everything I could think of to keep the complaints to a minimum so I can enjoy fishing! I can't wait for ice. I'm sure I will wish I did some things different, like build one only big enough for me but for now the whole family loves it.

You might be ok being in MA, but as you have seen I built a shack about the same size, with skids much the same, the first year I put it out pulling it out with my truck in 3-4" of snow was no problem, but let me tell you come season end when there was lots of snow on the lake, it took a tractor to get it off, the skids are far to narrow to float on the snow so it works like a massive plow.

Thought I would share that, like I said maybe large amouts of snow where you are isn't a worry. Happy fishing

DBK81, I keep the shack in northern Maine. Snow may be an issue. I am planning on doubling the ski's (width) and I have some material for the bottom that should help it slide easier. That is something I was worried about. I have a Polaris Ranger I was going to tow it with. I hope it works. Thanks for the heads up. I am putting jacks on it so it is easier to keep blocked up. If it is tough this year, it will grow an axle!

  • Ice fishing a sport, or just reason to buy stuff?

I made tire chains for my 4 wheeler from cut down car tire chains. I can pull double what I could with out them. While we wait for ice, you'll love the chains. Like steorids!
