8k btu direct vent LP requirments
« on: Sep 18, 2015, 07:02 PM »
I bought the housewarmer 8k btu wall mount DV heater from Northern tool. I plan to run it on 20lb bottles with about a 8 ft run from bottle to heater. There are two stage and single propane regulators which both say they supply 11" WC of gas which is what the furnace is supposed to need. So do I need the two stage regulator or will the single work? Also some references say that you need a 100lb tank to run these things and some say a 20lb will work. I think the reason being is gas space/volume in the small tank. There are many other heaters and cookers putting out far more Btu running 20lb tanks so what are your thoughts on these two questions.

Not an expert but a two stage propane setup is usually used where you have long lengths and/or high btu loads so that the line between tank and second stage regulator doesn't have to be a large size. Usually the line after second regulator is upsized as it enters the home. With a small btu load I would think a single stage 11"wc regulator would be fine. I'm sure someone else will have experience or thoughts on this. I would think a 20 or 30 lb bottle will feed that heater fine.

I have used an 8k orbis dv heater and 17k eskabe dv heater in my shacks and always used a single stage regulator.  If you keep your tanks outside bring a few regulators for cold weather.  I have had to swap them out a few times due to freeze up in the regulator.  I would think a two stage would give you more of a problem in cold weather.

Thats what I planned on using untill I started to do too much reading. So figured I would ask the guys that actually run similar setups. Going to plumb it today and install the vent/intake. Many thanks for the help guys.
