There are some gray areas in the law book for sure like brook trout possession/catch limits in eastern Maine. I still am very surprised that the areas in Maine with the most ice are the ones closed Apr 1st to ice fishing. It seems that 2 years ago when southern Maine lost their ice in early March some laws were adjusted for that half of the state while Northern and Western Maine got robbed of some great ice fishing oppertunities.

you can keep 5 from streams. 2 from ponds and lakes unless stated otherwise; i know at least one you can keep 5. don't see any gray areas. most of the better ponds in northern counties you can't keep more than 1 or 2 either.

gotta look at every body of water individually. just because it's in a certain county doesn't mean it has different laws than any other body of water whether it be in a southern or northern county.

If they can't make a law book simpler with a lot more common sense . Let the bucket Biologists   make the laws. When you look at all the pictures and read the fun times had by fishermen this past winter. The Bucket Biologist  was the one that made all the Crappie and pike pictures  possible .NOT THE STATE,  One of the last good Biologist the state had was Mr. Deroche and the lake trout he stocked in Sebago. All the enjoyment it has given fishermen over the years .No to mention what it has done for the economy for the Sebago area.

some would argue with you that the togue in sebago have done just as much harm as pike or crappie in other places.

I think there is room for both non native waterways and native/ salmonid waterways.  I would say that having some waters like Sabattus and Little Sebago that feature predominatley bass, pike, crappy, etc. should be managed as such and thats fine.  I do support the management of places up north in Allagash and Aroostook counties and brook streams in southern and eastern maine as salmonid fishing areas.  As many have mentioned the state of maine is one of the best managed and maintained fisheries in the country so we must be doing something right.

First, let me apologize to B.W. for how this thread has taking a twist after he asked a pretty simple and straight forward question to begin with. Secondly, let me say I really wanted to be done with this but.....

Your post publicly insinuates that bucket biology is a "good thing."     Regardless of what one feels about pike and crappie, no individual has the right to take matters into their own hands and create a fishery of their own choosing.  Your post not only serves as an endorsement and encouragement to these environmental terrorists, it is reckless and just plain wrong. :(  Think about it.

I do agree with what you are saying. But the state should be improving fisheries more than they are, It all cost money, But There are some changes that would not cost a great deal and improve fishing for some of your warm water species of fish. Climate change is a bigger factor than most realize ,

Tell us with your insightful knowledge on the subject how would you in you opinion improve these fisheries ? Would you be willing to pay more taxes make all of these amazing improvements you are sure to think of ?

Bucket biologist, the illegal introduction of invasive species, is the biggest threat to fishing in Maine. I think that they don't realize how much harm it does to a fisheries. You introduce a species into a lake or pond you effect the whole pond, it tributaries and the entire watershed. Once you introduce a species it is nearly impossible to remove that species.

I have a great idea for you since you love invasives so much... Introduce some Asian carp. They get big and plentiful.

BS
On page 5 of the rule book there is a section titled "HOW TO USE THIS BOOK". If you still have trouble after reading that you might consider some adult literacy classes.

Your admiration for bucket biologists is disturbing and somewhat frightening. Crappie and pike don't belong in any Maine waters and the best thing fishermen can do with those species is kill every one they catch. The same is true for bass in some places. Catching invasive species is fun but we should remember that they are invasive and we should do our part to help control their populations.

If they had the same format as the depth maps by county . It would be so simple.

I live in jackman and the road to little big wood is plowed to the landing so it will be easy getting in now. great fishing out there. just take care around both the inlet and outlet but there is also good fishing around them too.
