Late season Crappie tactics
« on: Mar 08, 2014, 03:55 PM »

I have never targeted crappie before, and I'm thinking about going after some on a smaller lake with a healthy population of them. The majority of the lake is shallow and weedy, with loads of scattered islands and lots of fallen timber, all less than 10ft of water. There is one bay in the lake, however, that goes from 10ft to 50ft in the very middle, and that's usually the part of the lake that is fished. I know people often fish deep for crappie that are suspended, but I was just curious as to the behavior of crappie during late ice. Do they move in shallow like a lot of other fish species do during this time? Are they still probably in deep water? It's been a little hard for me to find information on their behavior during this time of the year, and I am just wondering what sort of behavior crappie tend to exhibit in the month of March. Thanks and best of luck out there to everyone!

Awesome, thanks! There's a lot of ice to drill  through with the old mora hand auger and it's good to have a little bit of an idea of what depths to target without drilling a dozen holes at the wrong depth. Thanks again.

Look for weedy bays with streams flowing into them come late ice.  The crappie will stage there until ice out and move towards that warmer water.  Many ponds have a marsh area with small sloughs or set/cutbacks, these are the bays you'll want to focus on as that warmer will warm fast.  It's also important to know that the north side of a body of water warms first. crappie love warmer water in the spring time.  Good Luck
