First Pike Through The Ice

Went out to Bantam today for the first time in high hopes of catching a pike. I've never fished for pike before so i was very pleased with catching a 4 pounder. I was so scared, when i got to my tip up i grabbed the line and as soon as i grabbed it it was at the end of the spool. If it was a split second later my tip up would have been swimming. She isn't the biggest pike out there but for a first pike i think i did great. Thanks icechaser and Jessox80 for the tips!

I learned to ice fish for pike fish almost exclusively through info I got from this site, so I'm glad I could pay it forward. That's a great first pike, keep 'em coming!

Btw, I learned a hard lesson from a spooling and now have line tied to line on almost all my traps.

Congrats on your first pike!
Now did you hook the pike, or did the pike just hook you into pike fishing

Good stuff man. I've been spooled out before. Now I have 100 yards on each spool. You're 1 for 1 pike fishing, which is way better than my odds.

Yea that's the next fish on my hit list, haven't gotten my first walleye yet. I should hit up Gardner's soon though, I'll try to get out there this weekend if one of my fishing buddies is up for it. But today all I was thinking about was pike fishing. I really want to go out again.
Thanks guys

Awesome fish!-next time maybe a trophy!-Always happy to get people into the fish. I had a fish that size spool me like that many years ago-the tip-ups are stronger than a four-five pounder and was spinning around the hole on the ice when I ran over to it-fill up each tip-up w/ that line and run-I sprint over to flags in pike waters-never knowwhen that big one is on-good fishin'!

Keith...nice northern!
Since you're a pike "rookie" you may want to know that you will greatly improve that fishes survival rate by:
A) Not holding the pike vertically (use a horizontal hold)
B) Not holding the pike suspended by the gill plate
It may not make the most impressive photo, but better for the fish.
Not trying to "rain on your parade" and again congrats on your first pike.
