Cold hands
« on: Jan 22, 2014, 05:28 PM »
Hello,

Over the last few years my hands haven't been able to recover as quickly as they used to from sounding out the depth and baiting my tip-ups. The cold is unbearable and it is taking a lot longer. I have read the threads with the many good suggestions from rag wool and vinyl gloves, to special mittens, etc. I think my biggest problem is that I don't dry my hands and just put them back into a fingered glove. Eventually the glove gets wet and I am putting my cold hand into a cold glove.
I think from now on I will bring a few small towels to dry my hands after getting them wet. I think them placing my hands into a large mitten would get my hands warm as fast as possible. Does anyone have a suggestion on a mitten that is, most importantly, is easy to put on without pulling and squeezing my hand through the entrance of the mitten. Need to be quick on, and quick off. Maybe I could get a pair that can hold a handwarmer. Do you have a suggestion on a pair that has these two criteria. Would appreciate your suggestions. I am not crazy about the mittens where there is a finger flap that open and close. They need to be sealed.

I have a pair of the Arctic Armor Mittens like these and they are really warm but expensive...I got mine free when I bought a suit.

I think any x-large mitten with an added hand warmer placed inside would do the trick. I would go to a local sports/clothing shop that sells Winter clothing and try on a bunch of mittens

Thank you Big Rock,    I have heard their clothing line for ice fishing is excellent and don't mind spending a little more if they are going to last me. Will go to the site and check it out.

Oh forgot to mention it....the Arctic Armor Mittens really hold in the moisture since they don't 'breathe'

I have a pair of Ice Armor Xtreme gloves that have zippered compartments on the back side of the hand to place chemical hand warmers in. I have never needed a chemical warmer to keep my hands warm. If I wear them when being active like when using a snow blower, my hands will will perspire.
It seems to go from zero to hero all some have to do is lie.

I use some old ski mittens and don't usually need hand warmers inside (although I always have some with me).  But one trick I use to make sure that my hands warm up when I put the mitts back on is to put the mittens inside of my coat (not just in the pockets), or even in the top of my bibs if my coat is unzipped, EVERY time I take them off.  This way the mitts stay warm and dry and my hands warm up quick when I put them back on.  I'm also going to start carrying a hand towel with me, though, because the mittens are usually pretty wet by the end of the day and my hands will start getting cold.  I've got a towel that I think was for golfers that has a grommet and clip on one corner.  That should work well for this!

I have a pair Core Heat gloves, and core heat mittens. They run on 7 volt Lith Ion batteries. Expensive @ 200.00 a set, but on the low setting, they'll produce heat all day.
