New to ice fishing and need help (Allegany County)
« on: Dec 13, 2005, 11:24 AM »
This is my first post and any help would be greatly appreciated.  I would like to know places to fish for perch or walleye's and what the best techniques are to catch them.  I have started to collect some gear to get me started, (ice auger, tip ups, jigging rods and a ice shelter so far.) What else is a must for a ice fisherman?  I live in Belmont, NY but am willing to travel a bit for good fishing.  Once again I would appreciate any help.  Thanks!!

welcome aboard. there are enough lakes and ponds near by for you to try. cuba is good for walleye and perch. there are alot of smaller waters like case ,allen, harwood . these waters have perch, bass, gills, crappie and trout. the others
are quaker and chatauqua lake. quaker has trout/pike/gills and perch. chatauqua has a little of everything including walleye.good luck and hope to see ya out there.

I don't know too much about fishing out your way, Hunter, but don't forget to check the perch and walleye boards down below the state forums on the main page.

hunter while your gathering supplies, ya should get some kind of heat source too.  a 10lb tank with a heater attatchment should keep ya warm in your hut for most of the season.  its like hunting; all the poles and gadgets in the world wont catch ya fish if you're cold!

like the guy above said, cuba is a nice lake.  use a depth finder, find 25 ft. of water or more, put a weight clip on the end of your line, find the bottom, set a bobber, put a waxworm on a swedish pimple and drop it back down.  then if you're on cuba, hope that the lake has good fishing that day and relax  ;D

a heater buddy should work good for ya . it only requires a 1lb propane tank. it is small and good for haulin. does not take up much room.jmo.

Thanks for the information.  I have a buddy heater that I use in my deer hunting shack. I will take that with me.  I looked up the swedish pimple and saw they come in many colors.  do perch or walleye have a favorite?  Thanks

Hi Hunter
I'am from Belmont also. Sent me an e-mail and I will try to help you out some.  Got a good pond right close, Alma.  Should be ready by this weekend. Just click on my name for my e-mail address. Keep a tight line

from my experience, the perch favor chartrouse/pink tear drops, and small silver kastmasters or swedish pimples.  in you're goin' after perch, use the smaller sizes for pimples and kastmasters and tip em' with some sort of grub.
