Folks keep asking about rods. I'll keep saying the same thing. Fenwick my friend. My do-all is a medium light elite tech. But they have what you need. Don't skimp on a reel either! I see guys with $100 ice rods and a Wal-Mart reel. A good antireverse and drag are key.

Havnt used okumas. My shimanos have treated me well. I have an aetos spinning rod for softwater. If their aetos ice rod is anything like it then that may be the one! Heck I might get one now that im thinkin about it.

I use a st croix premier medium heavy for lakers. It is 36 inches.  It is sensitive and has plenty of backbone.  I really like the length but it could be too long if you fish in a shelter.  I pair it with a mid range okuma spinning  reel.  It works well and didn't break the bank.

I just got a 36mh Jason Mitchell mackinaw baitcaster in the mail the other day.  I had never held one in my hand because nobody sells them around here so I just ordered it to see.  It is heavier (action) than I expected it to be and I don't like the way they wrapped the guides either.  I love the spiral wrap baitcasting rods I have used... but with this one the only guide that it actually upside down is the tip. The second guide is at a 45 or so degree angle and so on, in my mind it should have at least 2 or 3 guides that are upside down to really reduce the torque and pull like a spinning rod like its intended to do.  All that being said the more I play with it I like how heavy it is and I'm beginning to not worry about the guides either, I'm sure it will work fine.  As far as sensitivity goes... Can't say yet but I will get back to you once I use it.  For under 40 bucks, it seems to be worth it at this point.

Though they aren't spinning rods, the St. Croix Premiers I have (34" Heavy and 34" Medium Heavy) are very nice.  I bet the spinning rods in the series are comparable.

You should start seeing them on closeout.  If you can pick them up for less than $30, it'd be a helluva deal.

BTW, the Premiere ice rods are made in Mexico, as were the older Legends.  The new Legends are made in the US.

My set up for lakers i just got is a st  croix med/heavy rod and a pfluger reel with one spool with 8lbs ice line and another spool with 8lbs power pro with a 2ft flouro leader. The pfluger reel is amazing  in my eyes with great drag setting and anti reverse

I have found a fenwick medium action rod i got at dicks for 20 bucks isn't a good laker rod. while it is very sensitive, it lakes the pulling power i would expect from a med action rod.

They have a medium heavy. I'll be taking my medium light out Saturday for Lakers with 4# test. Should be fun

i'd hate to hook on to that big one and lack the power in the rod needed to bring them up. lighter rods also lack the ump needed for a good hookset when using bucktails

I will be honest, my med/hvy jigging rod is form Wallyworld and it cost me 20 dollars with a reel. I just took the reel off and put a Shimano on it.

It is called the Dock Demon. It is a very good rod with decent sensitivity. I added a spring bobber to it. I have hauled in big bass on it in open water checking to see how strong the pole was. It works.

I would love to get a TB or a ST croix but my money goes to the kids/wife and bank account. After that, I get to buy stuff for me. Not complaining, just letting you know what can be achieved on small budget.
