KPD.... I was actually interested in getting a Magnum for those very reasons that you mentioned - and because of the smoking deal I could have gotten on one. Thing is, I don't fish in sandy, dirty ice, over logs/sticks, etc.... I ice fish in a handful of lakes and only one has a concentration of clay/mud in the water, and maybe a few weeds. That's it. I love the idea of never having to change out your blades and having an auger that is super dependable. I just wanted a little more speed without compromising quality - and I got a great deal on the lazer mag as well.

I am fat, out of shape and getting older....I have debated getting n 8"bit for my auger. My buddy picked ups SM magi 8" the other day, that thing is light as a feather compared to mine.

Right, as far as the laser goes, many many people speak very highly of them, you made a good purchase.

Thanks. I hope so. It's my first power auger so I'm excited. I have heard nothing but good things about the magnum too.

10" augers are generally heavier and a little slower to cut a hole, but when it is below zero, those 8" holes freeze to 4" by noon and are closed solid by the end of the day if you don't keep chipping them every half hour. I find when it is that cold out you spend less time tending traps.
It must be something in the water.

I just got a strikemaster chipper drill for my eskimo powerhead because I like to fish a local river with sandy ice.  I tested it today in 24" of ice and I thought it drilled almost as quick as the eskimo drill with eskimo quantum blades.  So far impressed with the quality of the strikemaster drill and blades compared to the chinese eskimo crap.

That chipper blade is going to laugh at any sand you throw at it in the ice. You will have to sharpen it up.

After you have blown all you holes with it for the day  ;)

I ruined my eskimo blades within 20 holes in river ice beyond sharpening so I bought the strikemaster chipper drill to see how it compares.  Hoping to hit the river next week to give it a real test.  So far only tried it on a local lake.  Mabye next year I will buy the strikemaster lazer drill and get rid of my eskimo one for when I want to make swiss cheese of the ice on my favorite clean lakes and ponds.
