Help with Trout
« on: Jan 28, 2014, 07:04 PM »
Hello. My goal for this weekend is to catch a few trout. I have been to Mahoney a few times this ice season and have only caught one. I was wondering if anyone knows of a good trout area around Omaha. I was thinking about Standing Bear, has anyone been there recently? How was the fishing and ice? Thanks in advance!

I've only fished them at Fremont Lakes.  I will tell you that they love minnows.

I take the kids to Standing Bear, and they have a riot catching them.

You have been to the Century Link Pond at Mahoney State Park and only caught one trout?

What were you doing?  Where, how did you fish?

I have been about 50 yards in front of the dam. I mostly fished with wax worms and minnows just off the bottom. I didn't realy see anyone else catching trout.

We caught and mostly released lots of them during the ice fishing workshop we held there a few weeks ago.  Aggressive jigging with small spoons tipped with wax worms worked best.  If you have a depth-finder you could watch the trout chase the baits as they were raised.  If you don't have a depth-finder try fishing in about 8 feet of water and just looking down the hole.  I know several folks who caught trout at Mahoney that day doing that too.  Fish were caught all over the Century Link pond including in front of the dam.  The corners were good too and around any brush piles you could find.

Thanks for the info! Do you think the ice should fine by the weekend?

Yes.

But I would always tell you to be careful and that is especially true right now.  There are places where you can find good ice right now, but there are areas of open water that the wind has ripped open in recent days.

Be careful.

Halleck Park in Papillion isn't a bad little spot to catch trout either. Was there for 1 1/2 hours last saturday and caught 4 trout and 1 sunfish. It's a small pond so not very hard to get around.
