Batteries for camera!
« on: Feb 13, 2006, 08:36 PM »
I use a kodak digital camera on the ice.
It takes 2 AA batteries. I use rechargable batteries in it. The problem is, the batteries are fully charged in the AM, but when i get out on the ice, in the cold, they instantly go dead, even inside the carry case inside a cooler!

Anyone have any good batteries that last on the ice or tips that can help make them last longer?

I hate having to rush the tourney entry pics due to batt. life! :'(

try keeping your batteries in your pocket close to your body where they will stay warm...

What type of rechargeable batteries are you using?

I've had my camera for two years now, and have noticed that the rechargeable batteries are not holding a charge like they used to. I simply carry an extra set of AAs. I don't think carrying batteries in your pocket makes any difference.
Ever hear of storing batteries in the fridge?

Try using lithium batteries. A little on the expensive side, but have pretty good lasting power.

I just always have a spare set. Cold shouldn't bother them unless it is extreme cold.

In my digital cameras that require AAs, I've always used NiMh (nickel metal hydride) and have had no problems. However, they always need replaced about once a year. If you're using NiCads, forget it. Those things are useless in digital cameras. My good camera uses lithiums, and they hold up very well.

make absolutely sure that when you recharge your batteries, that you DO NOT take them out of the charger even though they show green/fully charged....they are NOT fully charged until they are completely cool to the touch....found this out the hard way, even though I carry another full set when I venture from home.....if you do not follow through until cool, your batteries will not last more than several pictures...(and I use energizers).....Grump

My camera can use NiMh (NiHh also cpme in different storage capacities) or alkaline batteries. The manual for my Canon specifically says NOT to use NiCads.  Check your owners manual to see what batteries your camera can use.  In a pinch AA alkalines can be a picture saver.  For $20 at BJs one can buy 40 AAs.

batteries will drop voltage (charge) when they get cold, espicially nimh batteries, which are almost usless at freezing temps. If you try to keep the camera and batters warm, you would probably have much better results.

lithuim-ion is the best for using in cold temps., but are pricey.

to answer you specifically,,,

-im guessing your batteries are nimh, and that is probably the problem. Remember that rechargable batteries dont last forever. Test them at regular temps to see how many pictures you can take, if they still die quickly the batteries are obviously bad.

- Try keeping the camer in a pocket inside your coat to keep it warm. Nimh batteries will last much longer like this.

-You could try alkaline (better in cold weather), but some cameras dont work well with them because the voltave instantly drops when you use an alkaline battery (others hold steady voltage longer)

-disposable li-ion batteries would also solve the problem, but they are expensive and probably hard to find. However, they do hold a steady voltage untill they are basically dead, and are the best performer in cold weather.

Thats what I have in my olympus stylus 600  I would never go back to anything else. I have charged it 2 times in about 250-300 pics/6 months.  Its awsome.  My rechargables in my sony go dead in maby one outing in cold weather. well I allways have backups with that camera.

Hi ...........just a thought but i think that rechargeable batteries are only 1.2 volts and not 1.5 as one would expect...so using them in your camera especially if you use a flash would result in a much reduced usable life expectancy.......just a thought....check your batteries and see if that is correct and let me know............GULF
