I was just curious if anyone knows how ice gets out from Marblehead lighthouse. looks like from map you can access deeper water in a short distance, or is that wishful thinking?

Most years there is no ice even when the western basin is covered. There was a lot of open water between Marblehead and Kellys Island last week. I've never heard of anyone ice fishing there, I know I wouldn't.

About 8 years or so ago . The ice was better there then Catawba . Mazurics was a zoo that year to say the least . The South Bass people had a trail marked out there all the way to the Island .  Fishing was outstanding just west of Kelly's . We fished a little over 10 miles out from Mazurics and hammered the fish for 2 weeks straight out there .  Have not been able to fish that area since due to lack of Ice .  Maybe this year it will happen again with the good start to the season .

Yep fished there also then. Catching those 03 fish then. Plenty of small ones.

Ice is maybe a quarter mile out, if that as of MLK Monday at the lighthouse and open water as far east as you can see.  alot of open water from the mainland to Kelleys also. Ice really does not really start locking in until east of starve. Pretty much ice off the shores of Marblehead then towards Catawba turns north, east of starve and along the shore of Kelleys. So basically a large oblong shape of open water east of starve if I am making sense??
