thinking of building a new shanty..
« on: Jan 20, 2014, 10:19 PM »
well the plans are being made right now of a new shack for next year. I'm think a 12x8 drop down shanty. I'm gonna make it all from aluminum square tubing and aluminum sheets and finishing off the inside with nice tongue and groove cedar. thinking of putting at least 4 bunks. 3 folding from the wall and one that turns into a nice table and seats. thinking of putting in a nice small propane oven and a small room for a bathroom.... now that iv listed some of the things i want i might need to build a 16x8.. lol any one have any ideas or know where i could find some low priced aluminum tubing and 4x8 sheets of aluminum. i live in Michigan and would like to buy everything some where here in the state unless i get some reasonable shipping rates

I'm not sure if aluminum square tubing will hold the fold down bunks.

Good luck with your project. We are in an area where there are many wheel houses to choose from. With a little planning and foresight building a good quality house that is still manageable on the lake is very possible. It's amazing how some of the large houses 8'x20'+ are still fairly easy to pull around and raise and lower.

It sounds like a fun endeavor, let us follow along as you build.

As long as all your cuts and welds are square you should not have a problem building everything out of aluminium. My girlfriends dad has a 12x12 that is wood frame built atop aluminium floor and runners. He has dragged that across some pretty crappy places and it has held up. He has a full wall of actual kitchen cabinets, a full sliding patio door and a fold out couch. Oh and a 6x12 front porch. It is a mini camp for the ice.
Fishing is like playing at Carnegie Hall, when your good your good. But do you know how to get to Carnegie Hall? PRACTICE!
