Chip v. Shave
« on: Dec 07, 2005, 02:49 PM »
What are the differences between chipper blades and shaving blades on a power auger?  I know the physical difference.  I mean to say what are the differences in performance, usage, durability, maintenance, etc?

I believe a Chipping blade has a longer life. The blades on a shaving auger rely on a thin edge, whereas a chipper blade relies on the fact that it's friggin huge..the angle is steeper and metal thicker on a chipper blade. IMHO, chipper is the way to go. Some Nils guys will flame me I'm sure....   :P

I'm new to power augers, despite the username.  I'm going to get my first one this week.  I was leaning torwards the Strikemaster Lazer Mag X-press just because I like their hand augers.  From my searches here, it looks like I might want to go with a Jiffy for the chipper blades, being a newbie and all.  Also from my searches, it looks like all the brands are the best ever, depending on who you ask.

I always had a jiffy with chipper blades(20years),last year switched to a strikemaster with shaving blades.BIG MISTAKE. For the times I use the auger and the ice conditions I experience, next year going back to a new shaft and chipper blades.Just my personal observation.

I picked up a demo model white lightning from jiffyonice.com under "specials"...215 delivered, thing is like brand new and works like a charm. Glad I saved myself some dough. Actually, I'm glad Scott saved me some dough, and I think Rendo (doug) told him...so everyone saved me dough in a way.

I like Chipper Blades mainly because you can sharpen them. When done carefully they are very easy to keep a sharp edge.

Just my $.02

I believe a chipper blade breaks the ice up while drilling and a shaver shaves it. It takes about 10 minutes to sharpen a chipper blade and shaver blades usually have to be sent in to be resharpened.
It seems to go from zero to hero all some have to do is lie.
