Big Perch
« on: Jan 19, 2014, 04:45 PM »
Today was my and my buddies first day on the ice. We both are about 5 seasons into hardwater fishing. Through trial and error, self educating, and of course helpful advice from other ice anglers, we have managed to hook into an abudance of different species Vermont has to offer. Today on a new body of ice we've never fished we were targeting perch and pike. While we landed no pike we managed a solid amount of perch. While most ranged in the 10-12 inch range caught on perch bait tip ups and bibbets topped with eyeballs, we did land an awesome and personal best 2 pound yellow perch on a pike bait tip up. My question is is there any particular methods or lures best for attracting these big perch?

unless your fishing really deep water, its still a little early for the big breeders to be coming in shallow. And i would say exactly what your using. tight lines
What?? fish are biting, I'm gone

I've had some good luck getting bigger fish on plastics and tungsten jigs, tipped with spikes.the plastics are nuggies, big wedgies(yourbobberdown.com) and minnows(microspoons.com) these things often make the difference between getting the small ones and getting the big ones.

We were fishing 20 ft. It was awesome to hook such a fish. Jumbo perch are awesome. You can bet our next time out we will try everything to hook another. Thank you for the advice. It's greatly appreciated.

I think it's a possability, but what i always think of is a 18 inch walleye in champlain is a little over 2 lbs.I compare that to a perch and that's a big dam perch.I remember at chittenden dam 25 years ago they used to get them 17 inches.I never saw one but they used to get them that big.My buddy caught one 4 years ago 16 inches and that was big but they are not fat..Anything is possable but you should have a pic of a fish of that caliber.

That's is differently a big "SLAMMER" perch and congrats . if you want to catch big perch, you need to think what a big perch is looking for as far as food. you should watch some of my videos on here. Another thing to remember is that big perch like that are roamers and will not usually swim in schools of smaller perch. there is allot of techniques you could use to catch big perch but you need to know the body of water that you are fishing and what is the main Forge of the lake. If you fishing deep water perch like 25 FOW or more and the bottom is Flat and Muddy , then more then likely the perch will be feeding on larvae, bloodworms, scuds, etc.
Like tracker one said heavy tungsten jigs and plastics seem to work well in those situations.

Good Luck
I do all types of fishing; but I am Die hard Ice angler.
I love Ice Fishing the lakes of Rutland County. Recently moved to NY and now will be Ice fishing the Lakes Of New York.
