On the Hardwater - Jigging Soft Plastics for Panfish
« on: Jan 27, 2012, 09:54 PM »
Hey everyone.  I was going to post a follow up to my last post titled, "On the Hardwater - Ice Fishing Basics I" with the second part of that series, but I haven't finished writing it yet.  Instead, I felt the desire to go into more detail on one of my most passionate subjects on ice fishing, which I consider my specialty, jigging with Soft Plastics.  So, if you have time, check out my blog post titled, "On the Hardwater - Jigging Soft Plastics for Panfish" by clicking here:
http://fatboysoutdoors.blogspot.com/2012/01/on-hardwater-jigging-soft-plastics-for.html

Thanks for looking and I hope that you enjoy it.  Feedback is appreciated.

I'll move this to the tips section after a few days.

Thanks BT, I used to feel a bit lonely being a soft plastic nut, but I'm glad that there are more of us out there.  The past ten years have really been a plastics revolution in ice fishing.  I just really like using them.  When I hit the ice, it's the first rig that I pull out!

Thanks rags...glad you liked it.  My apologies if this costs you money  ;D

I found your site to be very informative but, in particular the spot about " if I only had wings I would flyfish" was a fantastic read! You truly have a great gift with words, in painting a picture for the reader! I like to flyfish/tie too so,I can definitely relate. It's an addiction without a cure for sure!! Keep up the great site! Thats pretty much all I own! LOL

Havent talked with you since last summer on MFF, hows the hardwater been treating you FB? Got out many times so far? Its been pretty good up here, and the warmer temps have been great to be out on the ice.

Unfortunately, this weird weather has left us without ice.  I'm working on maybe taking a trip next month, or in March, to Maine to visit Jim C. for some ice time.  My ice season might be a whopping four or five days...so you can bet that I'll be out there from sun up to sun set and beyond!  It all depends on finances and my work schedule.  It's really unfortunate, because everything within a four hour drive is now ice free :-\

The reverse side of that though is that the open water fishing has been really good...consolation I guess.  I was able to land my biggest walleye back in December, and a nice muskie.  This year will be my year of the muskie, I'm hooked on 'em now.

Good luck on the rest of your ice season! Lookin' forward to exchanging bass posts on MFF, but let's get some good ice time first!  @)

Thanks trico, but I can't take credit for that work.  That blog, "If I only had wings I would fly fish", is the work of a www.myfishfinder.com member who goes by the user name fishhooker.  I think his first name is Art, but I'm not sure if he's an IS member or not.  I agree, he pens some great stuff, that's why I have him listed as one of my favorite blogs.  I only wish that I had his talent with words.

I can relate to many of his posts, but that last one about the brookie fishery that he grew up with was really really good.

Sucks you havent got good ice.... At least youre getting good "preseason" open water fishing in.

We may not have good ice south of the 45th up here in March (havent in 2 years), so if you can get up in Feb Id jump on it. Good luck to you FB.

Use Google and do a search on the words Ratso jig.  For the big on-line tackle stores, browse through their crappie and ice fishing stuff on their websites.

Thanks for the good info/read.  I've been dabbling with plastics for the past few years, but I must admit only half-heartedly with little success.  After reading your info, I may have to give it a serious try next time out.

OK, now that they're sponsors, I can say it directly  ;D  You can get Ratso's at various retail stores or directly from Custom Jig's & Spins.  Their sponsor logo is on the top of the Iceshanty Home page.

By the way, I've ordered a few times directly.  You can get exactly what you want and they ship quickly.  Great folks to deal with.

Enjoyed the article very much. I have to admit I don't fish soft plastics that often but just started doing so this year.

Keep it up.
