Fan for a shack with high ceiling
« on: Dec 30, 2013, 10:04 AM »
I have an 8x14 shack with a sleeping loft so the ceiling is quite high.  I heat it with a vented LP wall heater and it works fine, however most of the heat is concentrated near the ceiling.  It's literally like a sauna up there and the floor is usually too cool.  Any recomendations on a fan or fans to move some air.  I'd like to run the smallest and quietest fans possible, but don't want to go too small and not get any air moving.  I run a little honda generator but I might be better off with 12 volt so I can move air when I don't run the honda.  Thanks!

fishhousesupply has 12v celing fans f $130 and only draw 1.2A so it wont kill your battery!
or what I did is run 2 batterys and a inverter and use a 110V fan pointed up at an angle

Thanks for the tip.  Are you saying that pointing the fan on an angle towards the ceiling is good way to circulate the heat?  If so, I like the idea of the fan not blowing directly down and blowing on us.

Not as nice looking but get a 12v computer fan or two and presto circulation

camper or trucking websites are great as just about everything for them runs off 12v. I bought a stainless steel fan off a trucking website. Its not the quietest but it pushes serious amounts of air... I will see if I can find it...I personally wouldn't want one of the small comuter fans. We move a lot (sometimes every 10 mins) and I want warm air on the floor NOW not after a while. So a larger more powerful fan works good for me.

Use a computer fan with a pice of  flexible dryer vent pipe going down the wall to push the heat to the floor.

I sit the fan on the floor and point it twards the celing where its not blowing on anyone and it works for me

I bought a couple of 12v larger computer fans.  In the picture, it appears that they have have a black, red, and brownish wire attached to a computer plug end.  Any advice on hooking this up to my boat battery would be appreciated.  Thanks!  And thanks for the tip with the dryer vent pipe.  I'm going to try the fans without the vent.  If that doesn't work I'll give it a try.  I have some flexible pipe in my garage.

the fan is probably not polarized, but the red is probably posative and the black negative and I would assume brown is ground.

Yes, I did a google search and it appears that its simply red to pos and black to neg.  And ignore the ground wire.  The only concern is that boat/car batteries can fluctuate more than 12v, but my computer fans are high quaity so I'm not going to worry about it.  I'll worry about it if I have a problem.
