swivel or no swivel?
« on: Dec 10, 2013, 06:07 PM »
Is it recommended to use a swivel between your leader and your braided line?  Or just personal preference? Does the little added weight effect anything?

i personally do. they reduce line twist, but a couple things are its just another potential weak point between you and the fish, and if you use too big a swivel there might not be enough toque to swivel the swivel, defeating the whole purpose!
If people concentrated on the really important things in life, there'd be a shortage of fishing poles.

Swivel for me, but it needs to be a quality ball bearing like Sampo or Spro or it is not worth using...

Same here.  Small, strong, and a good brand name.

Smallest Spro swivels, same ones I use on my trolling rods between the leadcore and the leader. Like others said I like the weight and I personally find it easier to tie a new leader on in the field if necessary.

Swivel on all of them here.

I always use a swivel or split ring mainly because I'm confident in my knots with them... line to line knots... not so much.

There may be some lead used in the process of making them... They still need to say that there is lead, because California is so stringent...

Most all fishing equipment is tagged "contains lead, may cause cancer to CA residents" (loosely quoted).
I think that's the least of their worries.  ;)
Those Eagle Claw's would be legal, but..
For my money, I would leave them on the shelf. Take some of the sage (is that the right word, Dick?  ;D) advice above and buy Spro, or Sampo's etc.. Spro #10 is what your looking for. Small, strong (35#) and it does swivel!

CD - I wish I had taken the time to purchase and change over all my gear to SPRO or Sampo's... I was jigging with my new PK Lure flutterfish Sunday in a small crappie/bass pond when the lure got absolutely SLAMMED (while I was trying to multi-task of course)... after setting the hook and before I could adjust the drag I got broken off... was upset at myself until I reeling in to find the swivel that my 4lb vanish leader was tied to was what failed... then I was pi$$ed. All the Eagle Claw's are getting changed out... I was fumed, but didn't let it ruin a beautiful day to be out on the ice.

I use a small one. Helps with line twist and when fishing shallow it is the only weight I have on there. I also use one on the jigging rod, doesn't seem to stop them hitting that either.

Good swivels, but not ball bearing, so if it is line twist you want to avoid...

Well, lesson learned. And a pic is worth a thousand words.  ;)
Re: drags, I like to set mine when I start fishing. I loosen them all the way up in between trips. If you have a hawg hit your line, he will run, but should not break anything off. If at the risk of being spooled, you can "incrementally" tighten your drag. I prefer light drags to breaking fish off. Hearing drags scream is not necessarily a bad thing, IMO.   :)

Couldn't agree more with the drag... normally I test/set them before I use the rod for the day and want them just tight enough to protect the line from breaking and being able to set the hook. The fact I didn't snap the 4lb leader leads me to believe it wasn't too tight, but I was still going to give it less (more line).

The combo I was using was the new in-line Eagle claw (picked it up at Dick's) and the one complaint I have so far is the drag. It is a star drag style on the crank, but I have had a hard time finding the sweet spot between the crank doing nothing (drag way too loose) and the drag being too tight.

If the problem was not enough drag, that would be easily remedied by some hand pressure on the side of the spool (like a fly reel). This was only my second time out with it though, hopefully I'll be able to get it to do what I like.

Agreed!
The fact that the swivel parted with 4# leader, gives you an idea of the quality of that particular swivel. I really like the idea of inline reels. Right now, I just have one, that I'm happy with although it does not have the free spool feature. The drags OK, but I tend to palm it as you mentioned.
Check reviews on the the Eagle Claws? Many of the newer inline reels have issues with their drags. Not positive about the EC's?
