No question for me.  Propane.  I had one issue with my Pro4... leaking propane hose.  Easy fix.

I have the pro 4 in 10". The biggest CON is that it is heavy. I like that it starts easy and don't have the smell of fuel in my SUV, garage etc... If you don't need a 10" drill, look into the new Pro lite, I hear they are a lot lighter than the Pro 4's. I have nothing against gas augers either, if I owned a pick-up, I might have bought a gas job.
It must be something in the water.

This is the third year for my pro 4 and never had a issue with it.  It starts right away (one or two pulls), can't say that about the gas auger i had.  No gas mess to deal with.

Okay the propane auger is the best thing since canned beer. It cuts fast no smell no leaky gas tank. There's only two cons one the line connecting to the regulator is aluminum and is weak but it's a real easy fix just a 9" piece of break line some fittins and some Teflon tape ( they have eliminated this line in the newer models by turning the regulator upsidown) second it is a little on the heavyside like Alex's said, but that's more of a good thing if your now one much for moving a lot, but the weight makes it so easy to drill with that I had a six year old drilling holes with it. So if there's the money it's the best auger on the market hands down

Defiantly some  improvements made to the fuel delivery system.  First generation had the aluminum tube.  2nd generation had copper in place of aluminum and rotated the carb a bit.  3rd gen has the regulator connect to the tank, then low pressure all the way in the hoses.  Best idea yet.

I think it boils down to personal preference.  I prefer gas and don't mind doing the mixing.  I think they both work just depends on the style you want.

What i like is only dealing with a small propane bottle and not so loud as a 2 stroke and should be trouble free for years, not to say you can't with a 2stroke, for me I've been wanting to upgrade  my jiffy lighting and I just happened to get a good deal on a pro4 from a friend.

I switched to the pro4 and I'll never go back to a gas auger! I rave about it all the time but there's good reason for it- it is quieter, more reliable, and cuts faster than most gas augers. Starts right up with one or two pulls every time and each can goes 150-200 holes. Add the benefit of not dealing with a gas can on the ice/spilling gas and it's kind of a no-brainer. For all of those advantages I don't mind that it's a little bulkier.

My Strikemaster/Honda Strikelite is pretty nice too. Quiet 4 stroke engine, doesn't stink up the wheel house and starts on the second pull when cold. My right shoulder is wore out and this auger is set up to be started with your left arm so I don't have shoulder pain after a day of fishing. It's been great for me so far.
It seems to go from zero to hero all some have to do is lie.

I worked on propane fork trucks for years... propane can and will have problems too... wait until you have to replace the diaphrams in the mixer ( carb)..have fun finding parts...not to mention they can explode..leaking propane is nothing to be triffeled with... very few  will want to admit  fault with the propane after the $$$$$ they dish out for them...we will see in a number of years if everyone is still in love with propane...on the other hand.. some one has to try this stuff.. and I remember thinking the same thing when electronic ignition replaced points.. I didn't get that one right...... meanwhile I'll keep mixing my gas with Amisol saber at 80:1 and enjoy my smoke free relatively  light gasoline auger...

I'm a little irritated with my Pro4 right now.  Maybe more irritated with Jiffy.... The hose leaks between the bottle and the regulator.  I had to order new parts from Jiffy.... Still waiting for them to be shipped.... They better be here by the weekend!  I leave for a big trip Sunday.  If not, I may have to talk nice to my neighbor and borrow his.

Don't get me wrong.... I'd still buy another Pro4.

The hose that goes from the case to the airbox dry rotted, not even a year old yet 8 months.

One of the lines connected to the regulator is an aluminum alloy that just doesn't holdup instead of ordering another I would recommend going to your auto parts store and using break line and brass fittings to replace the hole line

Mine had all brass fittings and pipe.  No issues past the regulator.  The leaks are in the swivel joints between the bottle & regulator.
